AIRPORT INFRASTRUCTURE IN TAMIL NADU

Will the Minister of CIVIL AVIATION be pleased to state:-
(a) whether Government has reviewed the status of airport infrastructure across the State of Tamil
Nadu, including passenger convenience, safety and operational efficiency;
(b) the measures adopted to expand Chennai International airport with new integrated terminals,
modernise Coimbatore International airport with advanced baggage and security systems and upgrade
Madurai and Tiruchirappalli airports with improved runways, lounges and cargo facilities to meet
rising demand; and
(c) the steps proposed to strengthen digital ticketing, grievance redressal platforms and real-time
monitoring systems at Salem airport and other regional airports to ensure sustainable aviation growth
in the State of Tamil Nadu?
ANSWER
Minister of State in the Ministry of CIVIL AVIATION (Shri Murlidhar Mohol)
(a) & (b): Tamil Nadu presently has six operational airports, namely Chennai, Madurai,
Tiruchirappalli, Salem, Tuticorin, and Coimbatore. The expansion and upgradation of airports is a
continuous process and is undertaken by the Airports Authority of India (AAI) and other Airport
Operators from time to time depending on the availability of land, commercial viability, socio-
economic considerations, traffic demand / willingness of airlines to operate to/from such airports.
AAI has undertaken the expansion and modernization of Chennai Airport in two phases at a total cost
of Rs. 2467 crore. Phase-II involves the development of Terminal-3, which will enhance the airport's
capacity to 35 MPPA. The proposal for construction of New Integrated Terminal Building (T3) along
with new apron bays at Coimbatore Airport is at a preliminary stage in AAI and is subject to
Government approvals, availability of land and requisite regulatory clearances. For expansion of
Madurai Airport, AAI has requested the State Government of Tamil Nadu for 653.35 acres of land,
out of which 543.41 acres have been handed over to AAI by the State Government. For long term
development of Trichy Airport, 512.52 acre land has been requested from the State Government, out
of which 457 acres have been handed over to AAI.
AAI Cargo Logistics and Allied Services Company Limited (AAICLAS) has established dedicated
domestic and international air cargo facilities at Chennai, Coimbatore, and Madurai Airports, a
dedicated international air cargo facility at Tiruchirappalli Airport.
(c): For grievance redressal, multiple digital platforms such as CPGRAMS, AirSewa, Sugamya Bharat
and the Integrated Grievance Redressal Mechanism (INGRAM) have been operationalized. Further, a
24x7 Passenger Assistance Control Room (PACR) has been established by the Ministry to enable
real-time monitoring and to strengthen passenger-centric grievance redressal and service delivery.Further, efforts have been undertaken to implement Digi Yatra at airports in a phased manner
facilitating seamless passenger processing.
