ANSWER
Minister of State in the Ministry of CIVIL AVIATION (Shri Murlidhar
Mohol)
(a) to (c): The Airports Authority of India (AAI) has undertaken the construction of a new
terminal building, extension and re-configuration of Apron Bays for Code-'C' type of Aircraft
and allied works at Belagavi Airport to enhance its capacity to handle 3.5 million passengers
per annum (MPPA) from the existing capacity of 0.8 MPPA. The physical progress of the
project is 78% and an expenditure of Rs.183.00 Crore has been incurred so far.
(d): At present, Belagavi Airport is connected with Ahmedabad, Bengaluru, Hyderabad,
Delhi and Jaipur. Following the repeal of the Air Corporations Act in March 1994, the
domestic aviation sector was deregulated, enabling airlines to independently plan and operate
routes based on commercial and operational viability. Accordingly, the commencement,
continuation, or suspension of air services at any airport is at the discretion of the airlines.
(e): Belagavi Airport is a domestic airport. Declaration of an airport as an International
including Customs airport depends upon traffic potential, demand from airlines for the
operation of international flights, and bilateral Air Services Agreement besides the provision
of Ground Lighting facilities, Instrument Landing System, runway length, Immigration,
Health and Animal & Plant Quarantine services etc.
