Parliament Question: Bharatmala Pariyojana in Tamil Nadu

THAMBIDURAI: Will the Minister of ROAD TRANSPORT AND HIGHWAYS be pleased to state:- (a) the progress of Bharatmala Pariyojana Phase-I as it approaches completion in March, 2026, the total length of access-controlled high-speed corridors operationalized during last five years and whether any such corridors have been developed or proposed in Tamil Nadu; (b) the impact of the Delhi-Mumbai Expressway and other major economic corridors on reducing travel time and logistics costs for industrial clusters in Western, Northern and Southern India, including Tamil Nadu; and (c) the status of the "Parvatmala" (National Ropeways Development Programme) in providing last- mile connectivity to high-altitude and major pilgrimage/tourist sites, including any proposals pertaining to Tamil Nadu? ANSWER THE MINISTER OF ROAD TRANSPORT AND HIGHWAYS (SHRI NITIN JAIRAM GADKARI) (a) Bharatmala Pariyojana Phase-I was approved by the Government in 2017 covering a length of 34,800 km across the country at an estimated outlay of Rs.5,35,000 Crore. Under the program, projects covering a total length of 26,425 km had been awarded and out of this, 22,223 km has already been constructed upto February 2026. Total length of operational access-controlled National High-Speed Corridors (HSC) / Expressways is 3,644 km in February, 2026. The details of Access Controlled Expressways /Highways taken up in Tamil Nadu during the last 5 years are enclosed as Annexure. (b) The development of Expressways and Economic Corridors, including the Delhi–Mumbai Expressway, have had a significant positive impact on reducing travel time and logistics costs wherever operational. These high-capacity, access-controlled corridors enable seamless long-haul freight movement, resulting in reduced transit time, lower fuel consumption, and decreased vehicle operating costs. They also improve reliability and efficiency of supply chains by minimizing congestion and bottlenecks on existing routes.
