CONDITION OF MONUMENTS AT HAMPI
4355. DR. DHARMASTHALA VEERENDRA HEGGADE:
Will the Minister of CULTURE be pleased to state:
(a) whether Government is aware of the dilapidated condition of certain parts of the
UNESCO World Heritage Site of Group of Monuments at Hampi and if so, the details
thereof;
(b) the details of funds allocated and spent for maintenance, conservation and restoration
of the site since 2021, year-wise;
(c) the steps taken for restoration works there and the funds allocated for the same; and
(d) the steps taken to attract visitors at the site?

(a) There are 57 monuments in Hampi World Heritage Site under the jurisdiction of
Archaeological Survey of India (ASI). Conservation and preservation of these
monuments/sites is a regular process and is taken up as per the requirement and availability of
resources as per the guidelines of National Policy for Conservation, 2014. All the monuments
are in a good state of preservation.
(b) The details of funds allocated and spent for maintenance, conservation and restoration of the
& site since 2021, year-wise are given as under:-

The details of conservation and restoration works undertaken at Group of Monuments at
Hampi are given at Annexure-I.(d) ASI takes several steps to promote and attract visitors to the UNESCO World Heritage Site,
the Group of Monuments at Hampi, such as organizing events on World Heritage Day, World
Heritage Week, and International Museum Day, Heritage walk etc.
The Group of Monuments at Hampi has been actively promoted by the Government of
Karnataka through a mix of infrastructure development, cultural promotion, marketing and
sustainable tourism initiatives details of which are given as under:-
Establishment of the Hampi Development Authority (HDA) to manage tourism and
conservation.
Development of roads, signage, parking, pathways and facilitation centres to improve
accessibility.
Cultural Events & Festivals (Hampi Utsava, Showcases music, dance and heritage of the
Vijayanagara Empire).
Promotion of Hampi as an "open-air museum" experience.
Branding Hampi as: A UNESCO World Heritage destination and one of India's Iconic
Tourism Sites.
Promotion of local livelihoods through crafts, markets and tourism services.
Inclusion in national scheme like Swadesh Darshan.ANNEXURE – I

bazaar and re-setting the same as per original
by using old stone members after
strengthening the foundation.
13. Conservation To Virupaksha Temple The restoration of damaged dilapidated /out
South of bazar at Hampi of plumb Mandapas and bazaar of South of
Virupakhsa Temple has been carried out by
carefully dismantling the Mandapas and
bazaar and re-setting the same as per original
by using old stone members after
strengthening the foundation.
14. Conservation to Sri Virupaksha Removal of accumulated earth on the
Temple and Complex (Conservation of Northern side of the bazar and exposing the
North Bazaar - Exposing the ancient ancient pathway and providing stone pitching
pathway) at Hampi etc.
