CONSERVATION OF ROCK CARVINGS
†2449 Shri Narayan Tatu Rane:
Will the Minister of CULTURE be pleased to state:
(a) whether the Government is implementing any special scheme for the conservation,
promotion, and documentation of rock carvings (petroglyphs) located in various areas of
the country;
(b) if so, the details thereof along with the progress made so far;
(c) if not, whether the Government proposes to take special steps for the conservation of
petroglyphs;
(d) whether the Government proposes to announce any special tourism package to boost
tourism in the Konkan region; and
(e) if so, the details thereof?

(a) The Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) undertakes conservation and maintenance of
to centrally protected monuments and archaeological sites on a regular basis under its

annual conservation plan, based on the requirement of the site and availability of
resources. Since there are no petroglyphs under the protection of ASI, no separate scheme
for their conservation, promotion and documentation is under consideration.
(d) The Ministry of Tourism promotes diverse tourist destinations and experiences including
& Rock carvings, heritage sites in the country through various initiatives in domestic and

international markets. The promotion is carried out through organizing and participating
in travel events and exhibitions; providing assistance to State Governments for organizing
fairs and festivals; inviting influencers, tour operators, journalists and opinion makers to
visit the country under the Hospitality Programme of the Ministry; various outreachactivities through website and social media; promotions in association with the State
Governments and the overseas Indian Missions etc.
