Parliament Question: Current status of airports in the State of Maharashtra

GOVERNMENT OF INDIA MINISTRY OF CIVIL AVIATION RAJYA SABHA UNSTARRED QUESTION NO : 991 th (TO BE ANSWERED ON THE 9 February 2026) CURRENT STATUS OF AIRPORTS IN THE STATE OF MAHARASHTRA 991. SHRI DHANANJAY BHIMRAO MAHADIK Will the Minister of CIVIL AVIATION be pleased to state:- (a) whether Government has assessed the current capacity and infrastructure constraints at major airports in the State of Maharashtra, particularly Mumbai, Pune, Nagpur and Aurangabad; (b) whether congestion, slot saturation and passenger inconvenience have been reported at these airports; (c) the details of steps taken or proposed to augment terminal capacity, runways and air traffic management systems; and (d) whether Government plans to expedite greenfield airport projects and expansion under the UDAN and other schemes to improve regional air connectivity in the State of Maharashtra and if so, the timelines fixed for completion of such projects? ANSWER MINISTER OF STATE IN THE MINISTRY OF CIVIL AVIATION (Shri Murlidhar Mohol) (a) to (c): The Airport Operators continuously assesses capacity and infrastructure constraints and accordingly undertake the expansion and modernisation of airports including augmenting the terminal capacity, runways and ATM systems. Development works are implemented in a phased manner, subject to availability of land, financial viability and operational requirements of intended aircraft operations. At Mumbai Airport, Mumbai International Airport Limited (MIAL) has undertaken expansion of Terminal T2 to augment passenger handling capacity from 40 Million Passengers Per Annum (MPPA) to 45 MPPA. Further, to upgrade airside infrastructure, MIAL has undertaken development of link taxiways, extension of existing taxiways and construction of Rapid Exit Taxiways. For expansion of Pune Airport, the State Government has been requested to hand over 330 acres of land to the Airports Authority of India (AAI).For Air Traffic Management (ATM) systems, a new ATM automation system has been installed as a replacement at Mumbai Airport. For Nagpur and Aurangabad airports, AAI has undertaken action for installation of ATM automation systems. The Slot Allocation Committee assesses the slot distribution & unutilised slots, twice a year, as per Slot Allocation Guidelines issued by the Ministry. (d): Under the Greenfield Airports (GFA) Policy, 2008, Airports at Shirdi, Sindhudurg and Navi Mumbai in the State of Maharashtra have been operationalised. Further, under the Regional Connectivity Scheme-UDAN, seven airports in Maharashtra, namely Kolhapur, Jalgaon, Nanded, Nashik, Gondia, Sindhudurg and Amravati, have been developed and operationalised. Solapur Airport has also been operationalised for commercial operations. In addition, the State Government of Maharashtra has undertaken the development of Ratnagiri Airport. The timelines for completion of airport projects depend upon various factors such as land acquisition, availability of statutory and mandatory clearances, financial closure and other site-specific constraints. *****
