DELAY IN IMPLEMENTATION OF UJANI–SOLAPUR WATER PIPELINE PROJECT

Will the Minister of JAL SHAKTI be pleased to state:
(a) whether the Government is aware of the persistent delays faced by Ujani–Solapur Water Pipeline project
despite multiple public assurances and if so, the details thereof;
(b) the present stage of its completion along with the funds released in this regard and the reasons for
missing earlier deadlines;
(c) whether cost overruns have been reported in this regard and if so, the details and quantum thereof; and
(d) the steps being taken by the Government to ensure timely completion of the project and provide
uninterrupted water supply to Solapur city and adjoining areas?

IMPLEMENTATION OF UJANI–SOLAPUR WATER PIPELINE PROJECT”
(a) & (b) Water resources projects are planned, funded, executed, and maintained by the State
Governments themselves as per their own resources and priorities. Role of Government of India is to
provide technical support and, in some cases, partial financial assistance under the existing schemes
implemented by the Ministry of Jal Shakti.
It has been informed by the Solapur Municipal Corporation that the Ujani-Solapur water pipeline
project has not faced any persistent delays. The work order for implementation of the project was issued on
01.06.2023 with scheduled completion by 01.12.2024. Considering land acquisition requirements and the
execution of 74 major crossings in the alignment of pipeline, an extension of six months was accorded. The
project has been completed successfully on 31.05.2025. The project has achieved full physical progress
with commissioning and testing.
Funding to the project includes contribution from different entities, including Rs. 250 crore under the
Smart City initiatives, Rs. 250 crore from National Thermal Power Corporation (NTPC), and Rs. 382.68
crore from Government of Maharashtra. The cumulative project cost stands at Rs. 882.68 crore.
(c) & (d) No cost overrun has been reported by Solapur Municipal Corporation.
The project has been completed while maintaining uninterrupted water supply to Solapur and
adjoining areas. During execution, the existing 80 million litre per day (MLD) Ujani–Solapur remained
operational. With the commissioning of this new 170 MLD system, Solapur now has enhanced bulk water
availability ensuring improved and reliable urban water supply.
