Demand of Sports Academy in Murshidabad Lok Sabha Constituency

Will the Minister of YOUTH AFFAIRS AND SPORTS be pleased to state:
(a) whether the Government is aware that Murshidabad Lok Sabha
Constituency is one of the lagging Constituency in terms of Sports;
(b) if so, whether the Government has any proposal to establish a well
equipped sports academy in Murshidabad Lok Sabha Constituency; and
(c) if so, the details thereof and if not, the reasons therefor?

(a) ‘Sports’ being a State subject, the responsibility of development of
sports, rests primarily with the respective State/Union Territory
Governments. The Union Government only supplements their efforts by
bridging critical gaps. The Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports has not
conducted any study to assess if Murshidabad Lok Sabha Constituency is
one of the lagging Constituency in terms of Sports.
(b) and (c) Under the Khelo India Scheme, sports academies are accredited
based on proposals received from State Government. No proposal has been
received from the State Government of West Bengal for accreditation of
sports academy in Murshidabad Lok Sabha Constituency. However, Jawahar
Navodaya Vidyalaya, Station Road, Swarnamoyee, P.O. Berhampore, District
Murshidabad, has been notified as a Khelo India Centre in the Murshidabad
Lok Sabha Constituency.
