Parliament Question: Development of Buddhist tourism circuit in Raigad

GOVERNMENT OF INDIA MINISTRY OF TOURISM RAJYA SABHA UNSTARRED QUESTION NO.4465# ANSWERED ON 02.04.2026 DEVELOPMENT OF BUDDHIST TOURISM CIRCUIT IN RAIGAD 4465# SHRI DHAIRYASHIL MOHAN PATIL: Will the Minister of TOURISM be pleased to state: (a) whether the Central Government proposes to develop Buddhist heritage sites like Thanale Caves, Nenavali Caves, Gandharpale Caves, and Kuda Caves in Raigad district of Maharashtra in the budget for 2026-27, similar to the development of Buddhist sites in the North-Eastern region; (b) whether there are plans to promote eco-tourism and pilgrimage by including these sites in the "Konkan Buddhist Trail" under the Swadesh Darshan 2.0 scheme; and (c) the amount of funds allocated for promoting Buddhist tourism and local employment in the Konkan region and the implementation timeline thereof? ANSWER THE MINISTER OF TOURISM (SHRI GAJENDRA SINGH SHEKHAWAT) (a) to (c): Development and promotion of tourism destinations and products including identification of sites under different themes is primarily undertaken by the concerned State Governments (SGs)/Union Territory Administrations (UTAs). However, Ministry of Tourism through its schemes of ‘Swadesh Darshan (SD)’, ‘Swadesh Darshan 2.0 (SD2.0)’, ‘Challenge Based Destination Development (CBDD)’ – a sub-scheme of SD2.0 and ‘Pilgrimage Rejuvenation and Spiritual, Heritage Augmentation Drive (PRASHAD)’ complements the efforts of tourism infrastructure development by extending financial assistance to the State Governments/UT Administrations; subject to adherence to scheme guidelines, submission of Detailed Project Reports (DPRs) by them, availability of funds, Government directions, inter- se priority etc. Sanctioning of projects is an ongoing process subject to validity of schemes. However, presently there is no proposal under consideration to sanction Konkan Buddhist Trail under SD2.0 scheme. SD2.0 scheme is approved till March, 2026. The Ministry of Tourism through its multiple initiatives holistically promotes various tourism destinations and products of the country including Buddhist tourism.
