Parliament Question: Development of Greenfield Tourist Spots

GOVERNMENT OF INDIA MINISTRY OF TOURISM LOK SABHA UNSTARRED QUESTION NO.1222 ANSWERED ON 28.07.2025 DEVELOPMENT OF GREENFIELD TOURIST SPOTS 1222. SHRI AZAD KIRTI JHA: SHRI CHANDRA PRAKASH CHOUDHARY: Will the Minister of TOURISM be pleased to state: (a) the progress made in identifying and developing Greenfield tourist spots across the country in collaboration with the concerned State Governments and private investors; (b) whether any specific locations have been selected for development under the Greenfield Tourism initiative and if so, the details thereof including the status of infrastructure development and connectivity enhancements at these locations; and (c) the details of the measures taken/being taken by the Government to ensure balanced regional development of tourism infrastructure to prevent over tourism at already established destinations? ANSWER THE MINISTER OF TOURISM (SHRI GAJENDRA SINGH SHEKHAWAT) (a) to (c): Development and promotion of tourist destinations and tourism products including those at Greenfield tourist spots is primarily undertaken by the respective State Government/Union Territory (UT) Administration. At present, the Ministry does not operate any specific scheme dedicated to Greenfield Tourism Initiative. However, the Ministry of Tourism through its central sector schemes of ‘Swadesh Darshan(SD)’, Swadesh Darshan 2.0 (SD2.0)’, ‘Challenge Based Destination Development (CBDD)’ – a sub-scheme of Swadesh Darshan and ‘Pilgrimage Rejuvenation and Spiritual, Heritage Augmentation Drive (PRASHAD)’ schemes is complementing the efforts of tourism infrastructure development at tourism destinations across the country by extending financial assistance to the State Governments/UT Administrations, subject to availability of funds, adherence to scheme guidelines and submission of Detailed Project Reports (DPRs) by the State Governments etc. In addition, Government of Indiaunder its initiative for ‘Special Assistance to States for Capital Investment (SASCI)’ has also provided financial assistance to the States for development of tourism projects. The projects are identified subject to project proposals submitted by the concerned State Governments, its alignment with the guidelines, availability of budget, inter-se priority and as per the institutional framework formulated for the purpose. The projects sanctioned under the various schemes of the Ministry of Tourism include both green field & brown field projects and the coverage includes pan India representation in order to achieve balanced regional development of tourism infrastructure including prevention of over tourism.
