GOVERNMENT OF INDIA MINISTRY OF TOURISM RAJYA SABHA UNSTARRED QUESTION NO.2377 ANSWERED ON 12.03.2026 DEVELOPMENT OF TOURISM INFRASTRUCTURE IN TAMIL NADU 2377 SHRI R. GIRIRAJAN: Will the Minister of TOURISM be pleased to state: (a) whether Tamil Nadu has emerged as one of the top preferred tourist destinations in the country for ancient temples, heritage monuments, hill stations, beach and coastal tourism during the last five years and the current year and if so, the details thereof; (b) whether the Central Government provides financial assistance for the development of infrastructure facilities around ancient temples, heritage monuments, beaches as high-end tourism destinations; and (c) if so, the details thereof, including the names of schemes or programmes and the funds sanctioned and released? ANSWER THE MINISTER OF TOURISM (SHRI GAJENDRA SINGH SHEKHAWAT) (a): The Ministry of Tourism compiles information on Domestic and Foreign Tourist Visits from the State/UT governments. As per the information available with the Ministry, during the last five years, Tamil Nadu has remained in the top 2 States/UTs in terms of the number of visitors. The state wise number of tourist visitors during the last five years is given at Annexure-I. This includes visitors to ancient temples, heritage monuments, hill stations, beach and coastal tourism. (b) and (c): While development and promotion of tourism destinations and products is primarily undertaken by the concerned State Government (SG)/Union Territory Administration (UTA), Ministry of Tourism through its central sector schemes complements the efforts of tourism infrastructure development in the country by extending financial assistance to the SGs/UTAs; on receipt of the project proposals from the concerned State Government/Union Territory Administration in synergy with the scheme guidelines, Government directions, availability of funds, inter-se priority etc. The details of the projects sanctioned under ‘Swadesh Darshan (SD), ‘Swadesh Darshan 2.0 (SD2.0)’, ‘Challenge Based Destination Development (CBDD), a sub-scheme of Swadesh Darshan 2.0 scheme’ and ‘Pilgrimage Rejuvenation and Spiritual Heritage Augmentation Drive (PRASHAD)’ ’are given in Annexure-II. In addition, Government of India under its Special Assistance to ‘States for Capital Investment (SASCI) – Development of iconic Tourist Centres to Global Scale’ has also sanctioned projects in the country in Financial Year 2024-25, with the primary objective to comprehensively develop iconic tourist centres in the country including in the state of Tamil Nadu, branding and marketing them at global scale.
