DIGITISATION OF MANUSCRIPTS

Will the Minister of CULTURE be pleased to state:
(a) the number of manuscripts surveyed, catalogued and digitised under the Gyan
Bharatam Mission since 2023, State-wise and language-wise;
(b) the funds sanctioned, released and utilised under the Mission since then, including on digitisation,
conservation and digital repository development, year-wise and component- wise;
(c) the number of digitised manuscripts currently accessible to the public through official portals as on
date and whether such access is free; and
(d) the details of academic institutions, private collectors and research organisations
working on the digitisation and dissemination of manuscripts, State-wise.

(a) to (d) Gyan Bharatam Mission, announced during Union Budget 2025-26, is a flagship initiative
of the Ministry of Culture (MoC), Government of India to undertake manuscripts related activities
under various components including survey and registration of manuscripts, building robust
technology infrastructure and partnership, documentation, conservation, digitization, publication of
manuscripts and capacity building & research. More than 8 lakh digitized manuscripts in different
formats such as DVD, HDD, microfilms are available across the country. These digitized
manuscripts are being reformatted as per Gyan Bharatam Standard Operating Procedures (SOP),
out of these 1.29 lakh manuscripts are accessible to the public on the National Digital Repository
(NDR). In addition, National Manuscript Survey has been launched on 16th March, 2026 for
identification, documenting and creating a comprehensive national database of manuscripts
available with institutions, private individuals, scholars, mutts, temples, libraries and other
repositories and data of more than 12.97 lakh manuscripts has been already reported so far. During
financial year 2025-26, a total of Rs.13.29 crore has been utilized as on 15th March, 2026. This
Mission has been mandated to establish a nation-wide network of Cluster Centers (CCs) and
Independent Centers (ICs) across the country. A list of CCs/ICs onboarded so far is as follows:Cluster Centres
