Parliament Question: Environmental impact and green aviation initiatives

GOVERNMENT OF INDIA MINISTRY OF CIVIL AVIATION RAJYA SABHA UNSTARRED QUESTION NO. : 4018 TO BE ANSWERED ON THE 30th March 2026 ENVIRONMENTAL IMPACT AND GREEN AVIATION INITIATIVES 4018. SHRI A. D. SINGH Will the Minister of CIVIL AVIATION be pleased to state:- (a) the steps taken by Government to promote carbon-neutral growth and sustainable aviation in the country; (b) whether any roadmap has been prepared for adoption of Sustainable Aviation Fuels (SAF) and green technologies; and (c) the targets fixed for emission reduction and energy efficiency in the aviation sector by 2030? ANSWER Minister of State in the Ministry of CIVIL AVIATION (Shri Murlidhar Mohol) (a) to (c): Ministry of Civil Aviation (MOCA) has advised all the State Governments/UTs and developers of the upcoming Greenfield airports to work towards achieving Carbon Neutrality & Net Zero. Further, MoCA has also advised all the States/UTs to ensure Carbon Emission reduction measures and achieving Net Zero target ab-initio by incorporating design/standards in the Greenfield airport development proposal, Detailed Project Report (DPR), etc. At present, a total of 100 airports in the country have switched over to 100% green energy use. Out of these airports, four (04) airports namely Delhi, Mumbai, Hyderabad and Bengaluru have achieved the highest Carbon Accreditation Level 5 of Airports International Council (ACI) and have become Carbon neutral. The Government has approved indicative blending targets of 1% by 2027, 2% by 2028 and 5% by 2030 for Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) in Traditional Aviation Fuel, initially for international flights. The 41st ICAO Assembly adopted a long-term global aspirational goal (LTAG) for international aviation of net-zero carbon emissions by 2050 in support of the UNFCCC Paris Agreement's temperature goal. India has committed to be net zero by 2070. ******
