Willthe Ministerof HEALTH AND FAMILYWELFARE be pleasedtostate:
(a) whether the Government proposes to establish at least one medical college in each district
across the country;
(b) if so, the details thereof along with the details of work related to the establishment of
medical colleges in all the districts of the country, State/UT-wise and district-wise, especially in
Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar district of Maharashtra and Union Territory of Dadra and Nagar
Haveli;
(c) the details of the districts where no medical colleges have been established as on date,
State/UT-wise;
(d) the timeline for achieving the target of setting up at least one medical collegein each district
underthe said scheme alongwith the detailsthereof;
(e) the details of the number of new medical colleges established by the Government during
eachof the last three years, State/UT-wise anddistrict-wise; and
(f) whether academic sessions have commenced in all such newly established medical colleges
andif so, the detailsthereof,State/UT-wise?

(a)to (f): The Ministry of Health& FamilyWelfare administers a CentrallySponsored Scheme
(CSS) for ‘Establishment of new medical colleges attached with existing district/referral
hospitals’ with preference to underserved areas and aspirational districts, where there is no
existing Government or private medical college. The fund sharing mechanism between the
Centre and State Governments is in the ratio of 90:10 for North Eastern and Special Category
States, and 60:40 for others. Under the scheme, all the envisaged 157 Government medicalcolleges have already been approved across the country. The phase wise details of medical
collegesapprovedinthe countryare at Annexure-I.
Out of the 157 approved medical colleges, 137 colleges are functional, including 65
medicalcollegesthathave become functionalsince FY2022–23. The State-wise detailsof these
functionalmedical collegesare providedat Annexure-II.
As per guidelines of the Scheme, the planning, execution and commissioning of the
medicalcolleges approvedunderthe scheme istobe done bythe StateGovernment.
