ESTABLISHMENT/UPGRADATION OF NURSING COLLEGES

Will the MINISTER OF HEALTH AND FAMILY WELFARE be pleased
to state:
(a) the total number of functional Schools and Colleges of Nursing in the country,
along with their current intake capacity, State/UT-wise;
(b) the details of the scheme for establishing 157 new Colleges of Nursing in
co-location with existing Medical Colleges including the number, names and
locations of colleges approved so far, State/UT-wise and the criteria used for
approval;
(c) the total projects sanctioned under the Central Sector Scheme for upgradation of
existing Schools of Nursing into Colleges of Nursing including the number and
names of institutions covered and the current status of their implementation,
State/UT-wise;
(d) the details of the funds allocated, sanctioned, released and utilised under both
schemes during the last five years, State/UT-wise and year-wise;
(e) whether any proposals are pending under the said scheme from the State of
Andhra Pradesh; and
(f) if so, the details thereof along with the current status and timelines, if any set, for
their approval?

(a) As per the Indian Nursing Council (INC), the details of total number of
Government and Private Nursing Institutions, State/UT-wise as on 31st October, 2025
with admission capacity in the country is enclosed at Annexure-I.
(b) to (f) The Government has approved a Centrally Sponsored Scheme
“Augmenting Nursing Education– Establishment of new Colleges of Nursing (CoN)
in co-location with Medical Colleges” to establish 157 new nursing colleges for the
period from 2023-24 to 2026-27. These 157 New Nursing Colleges are being
established in co-location with the existing 157 medical colleges established since
2014. The State/UT-wise list of the originally identified 157 Nursing Colleges is
placed at Annexure-II. The fund sharing mechanism between the Centre and State
Governmentsisintheratioof 90:10forNorthEastern andSpecialCategoryStates,and
60:40forothers.Allrecurringcosts,includingmanpowerwillbebornebytheStates.
Based on the proposals from the State/UTs the Ministry has accorded approval
for the establishment of 113 new Colleges of Nursing across various States/UTs. The
details of 113 approved Colleges of Nursing along with State/UT-wise funds released
duringthelastfiveyearsareenclosedatAnnexure III.
In respect of Andhra Pradesh, three proposals were received from state of
Andhra Pradesh. Three (3) Colleges of Nursing at Piduguralla, Paderu, and
Machilipatnam have been approved under the Centrally Sponsored Scheme
“Augmenting Nursing Education– Establishment of new Colleges of Nursing (CoN)
in co-location with Medical Colleges”.
The Ministry of Health & Family Welfare also administers the Central Sector
Scheme “Development of Nursing Services”, which provides financial support for the
upgradation of existing Schools of Nursing into Colleges of Nursing. As per the
scheme guidelines, ₹7.00 Crore is sanctioned for each institution approved for
upgradation. During the last five years, 29 Schools of Nursing have been approved
for upgradation under the scheme. The State/UT-wise list of these 29 Schools of
Nursing, along with details of funds released during the last five years, is placed at
Annexure-IV.ANNEXURE-I
