Shri ARUN GOVIL: Will the Minister of JAL SHAKTI be pleased to state: (a) the details and total number of barrages situated on the Ganga River between Haridwar and Bijnor; (b) whether the Government is aware that several villages in Meerut district are affected by floods due to the release of excess water from the Bijnor Barrage during the monsoon and if so, the details thereof along with the steps taken by the Government for a permanent solution to the flood problem; (c) whether the Government has conducted any study regarding the possibility of an alternative water drainage project or construction of a canal for safe discharge of excess water from the Bijnor Barrage and to provide a permanent solution of the problem of flooding in Meerut district and if so, the details and findings thereof; and (d) whether such study has examined the possibility of diverting excess water to the Kali River or any other suitable watercourse and if so, the details thereof? ANSWER THE MINISTER OF STATE FOR JAL SHAKTI (SHRI RAJ BHUSHAN CHOUDHARY) 1(a) There are two barrages on the Ganga River between Haridwar and Bijnor, namely, Bhimgoda barrage in Haridwar district and Chaudhary Charan Singh Madhya Ganga Barrage in Bijnor district for irrigation purpose. (b) Flood management and anti-erosion schemes are formulated and implemented by the concerned State Governments as per their respective priorities. The Union Government supplements the efforts of the States by providing technical guidance and promotional financial assistance for flood management in critical areas. The Government of Uttar Pradesh has informed that the total length of the Ganga River in Meerut district is approximately 48.00 km. To mitigate the adverse impact of floods during the monsoon season, the 10.80 km long Hastinapur Embankment has been constructed in Meerut district as a continuation of the previously constructed Ramraj Embankment in Muzaffarnagar district. The embankment provides flood protection to a population of 7,915 and safeguards approximately 6,936.20 hectares of agricultural land spread across 15 villages situated along the right bank of the river, namely, Fatehpur Prem, Haripur, Dabkhedi, Sherpur, Shirjepur, Rustampur alias Bhikund, Hadipur Gaonri, Parsapur Hansapur, Bhagupur, Manpur, Rathoda Kalan, Latifpur, Chamraud, Kunhaida, Rupda, Lalpur, and Manoharpur. Further, two flood management projects on the Ganga River in the Meerut and Bijnor districts of Uttar Pradesh, having a total cost of Rs. 41.41 crore, have been completed with central assistance amounting to Rs. 20.97 crore released under the Flood Management and Border Areas Programme (FMBAP) Scheme of Union Government.
