be pleased to state:-
(a) the number of functional airports in the Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR) along with
their names, passenger-handling capacity and the status of commercial operations therefrom;
(b) whether the Government has formulated any comprehensive national strategy for airport-
infrastructure development, particularly to address the high aviation demand in Mumbai and
if so, the details thereof;
(c) the key components of the said strategy and the manner in which it is being implemented
in Mumbai and the MMR;
(d) the steps taken by the Government to manage rising domestic and international air-travel
demand in Mumbai including the measures to ease congestion and improve connectivity to
Tier-2 cities in Maharashtra;
(e) whether the Government proposes additional modern airport facilities to support
Mumbai’s aviation requirements and if so, the details and current status thereof; and
(f) the status of ongoing or proposed expansion and upgradation of airports serving Mumbai
including CSMIA and NMIA?

REGARDING "FUNCTIONAL AIRPORTS IN MUMBAI METROPOLITAN
REGION" ASKED BY PROF. VARSHA EKNATH GAIKWAD AND SHRI
SANJAY DINA PATIL;; (a): At present, Mumbai Metropolitan Region
(MMR) has three operational airports- Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj
International Airport (CSMIA), Mumbai, with a passenger handling capacity of
55 Million Passengers Per Annum (MPPA), Navi Mumbai International Airport
(NMIA), Navi Mumbai, with a capacity of 20 MPPA and Juhu Airport with
capacity of 0.05 MPPA. Juhu Airport is catering to helicopter and general
aviation operations only and does not have any scheduled flight operations. (b)
to (f): Government of India (GoI) has formulated Greenfield Airports (GFA)
Policy, 2008, for development of greenfield airports in the country. Under this
policy, GoI has granted 'In-Principle' approval for 24 greenfield airports across
the country, including the Navi Mumbai airport in the MMR. ;; As per winter
schedule 2025, CSMI airport, Mumbai is connected to approx 70 Domestic
cities including tier-2 cities of Maharashtra such as Aurangabad, Sholapur,
Kolhapur, Nagpur, Amravati & Jalgaon and the airport is operating at its full
capacity. To augment capacity and improve connectivity from Mumbai to
various cities in Maharashtra and across the country, a new greenfield airport at
Navi Mumbai has been developed which will compliment CSMIA under the
dual Airport System in MMR.; ; The combined envisaged Passenger Handling
Capacity of both the airports is 155 MPPA (CSMIA - 65 MPPA & NMIA - 90
MPPA). The 1st & 2nd phase of NMIA project was inaugurated recently on
08.10.2025 with a passenger handling capacity of 20 MPPA and its ultimate
phase is designed to handle 90 million passengers annually. Further, after
expansion of Terminal side infrastructure at CSMIA, Mumbai, it could cater
upto 65 million passengers annually.; Both CSMIA and NMIA has been
developed with modern airport facilities to meet Mumbai's aviation
requirements.
