GOVERNMENT OF INDIA MINISTRY OF CULTURE LOK SABHA UNSTARRED QUESTION No. 2319 TO BE ANSWERED ON 03/08/2026 “GRANTS TO MUSEUMS” 2319. SHRI SHAFI PARAMBIL: Will the Minister of CULTURE be pleased to state: (a) the details of grants-in-aid allocated, released and utilised for the establishment, modernization, conservation and maintenance of museums across the country during the last five years, year and State/UT-wise; (b) the details of museums in Kerala that have received financial assistance from the Government during the said period, along with the amount sanctioned and released, museum-wise; (c) whether any proposals for financial assistance to museums in Kerala are pending with the Government, if so, the details thereof and if not, the reasons therefor; (d) the criteria adopted by the Government for sanctioning grants to museums; and (e) the details of the measures taken/to be taken by the Government to strengthen museums as centres for preserving India's cultural and historical heritage, particularly in States with significant historical importance such as Kerala? ANSWER MINISTER OF CULTURE AND TOURISM (SHRI GAJENDRA SINGH SHEKHAWAT) (a) and (b) The details of grants-in-aid sanctioned, released and utilised for setting up of New Museums/development of the existing museums/digitisation of museum collections under Museum Grant Scheme during the last five years in the States/UT-wise are at Annexure-I (c) The details of proposals received in state of Kerala alongwith current status are at Annexure-II(d) Grant-in-aid is given on the basis of the category of the proposal submitted as per Museum Grant Scheme. The details of the grant-in-aid as per category/component is given as under: Component wise funding pattern as per the existing guidelines of museum Grant Scheme are as under:- Component (A): Purpose Maximum Amount of financial assistance (Rs. Category II: All Other Museum 25.00 (e) Ministry of Culture operates Museum Grant Scheme under which financial assistance is provided for setting up of New Museums/development of the existing museums/digitization of museum collections/setting up of virtual museums and training of museums professionals of museums managed by Central/State Governments, Societies, Autonomous bodies, Publicsector Undertaking, local bodies, Academic Institutions and Trusts registered under the societies Act at the regional, State and District Level in the country including Kerala. Further, the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) undertakes preservation, upgradation and modernization of its site museums from time to time, subject to availability of resources. The measures include modernization of galleries, improvement of museum infrastructure, digitization of collections, adoption of digital technologies for interpretation and visitor engagement, preventive conservation of antiquities, and augmentation of visitor facilities.
