Parliament Question: Implementation of Jal Jeevan Mission

SHRI SUNIL BOSE: Will the Minister of JAL SHAKTI be pleased to state: (a) the current status of implementation of Jal Jeevan Mission (JJM) to make provision of tap water supply to every rural household in the country, State/UT-wise; (b) the details of objectives and components of JJM; (c) whether the Government is likely to achieve the set target by 2024 and if so, the details thereof, State/UT-wise; (d) the details of tap water connections provided under JJM to rural households during the last three years, State/UT-wise; (e) the details of the States/UTs reported to have provided hundred percent tap water connection to every rural household till date; and (f) the details of funds released by the Union Government to the States, State/UT-wise? ANSWER MINISTER OF STATE FOR JAL SHAKTI (SHRI V. SOMANNA) (a) to (c) Since August 2019, Government of India in partnership with States, is implementing centrally sponsored scheme Jal Jeevan Mission (JJM) – Har Ghar Jal to make provision of tap water supply to every rural household in all villages across the country. To achieve the objective of the mission, following components have been envisaged under JJM: i.) Development of in-village piped water supply infrastructure to provide tap water connection to every rural household. ii.) Development of reliable drinking water sources and/ or augmentation of existing sources to provide long-term sustainability to water supply system. Page 1 of 2iii.) Bulk water transfer, treatment plants and distribution network. iv.) Technological interventions for removal of contaminants where water quality is an issue. v.) Retrofitting of completed and ongoing schemes to provide FHTCs at minimum service level of 55 lpcd. vi.) Grey water management-treatment and reuse; vii.) Support activities and capacity building of communities; and viii.) Funds to meet any unforeseen challenges/ issues due to natural disasters/ calamities. At the time of the launch, the Government also approved support for the States and UTs with a central outlay of ₹2,08,652 crore. The approved Central outlay has almost been utilized. Hon'ble Finance Minister during her budget speech 2025-26 has announced extension of Jal Jeevan Mission until 2028 with enhanced total outlay. (d) to (f) At the time of announcement of Jal Jeevan Mission, 3.23 Crore (17%) rural households were reported to have tap water connections. So far, as reported by States/ UTs as on 18.08.2025, more than 12.45 Crore additional rural households have been provided with tap water connections. Thus, as on 18.08.2025, out of 19.36 Crore rural households, around 15.69 Crore (81.02%) households, are reported to have tap water supply in their homes. So far, 11 States/ UTs viz. Arunachal Pradesh, Goa, Gujarat, Haryana, Himachal Pradesh, Mizoram, Punjab and Telangana, A&N Islands, Dadra Nagar Haveli & Daman Diu and Puducherry had reported that they had provided tap water connection to all rural households in the respective State/ UT.
