(a) to (e): The National Education Policy (NEP) 2020 promotes the involvement of communities and alumni in volunteer efforts to enhance learning in schools. To encourage community volunteer engagement, Vidyanjali - a school volunteer initiative was launched in September 2021. It enables community members, individual volunteers, institutions, organizations, alumni, NRIs, serving & retired officials/teachers and civil societies to directly connect with Government and Government-aided schools and contribute their services and assets, materials, and equipment through a dedicated portal (https://vidyanjali.education.gov.in/about-vidyanjali).
As of November 2025, a total of 8,17,711 Government and Government-aided schools, 5,59,862 volunteers, and 2,676 partner organisations including CSR entities, institutions, and civil society organisations have been registered on the Vidyanjali portal. At present, 8,43,961 Govt. and Govt.-aided schools, 5,61,843 volunteers and 2687 partner organization have been registered on the portal.
Vidyanjali enables volunteer contributions in two main categories: (i) sharing skills, knowledge, time and effort through services and activities and (ii) providing assets, equipment, and materials. Academic and co-curricular support includes subject mentoring, career counselling, and activities widely offered through the portal, such as yoga, sports, art and cultural activities, health and wellness workshops, and support for Children with Special Needs
(CwSN). Infrastructure support includes teaching–learning materials, ICT and digital facilities, STEM and innovation labs, sports equipment, libraries, laboratories, sanitation facilities, renewable energy solutions, and minor civil works.
Vidyanjali has strengthened learning support services and improved infrastructure in Government and Government-aided schools. It has contributed to a better learning environment, higher student engagement, greater exposure to experiential and hands-on learning, and improved availability of school resources. To date, more than 56,734 service activities and 35,695 asset contributions have been completed through the Vidyanjali portal, benefiting over 2 crore students across the country.
The PARAKH Rashtriya Sarvekshan 2024 was undertaken by the Ministry of Education to understand the performance under the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020 in the development of competencies among students at the end of the Foundational, Preparatory, and Middle stages of schooling (Grades 3, 6, and 9, respectively). Nationwide over 21.15 lakh students and 2.70 lakh teachers and school leaders from more than 74,000 schools across 781 districts from all States/UTs participated in the assessment.National, State and District level
reports for PARAKH are available at https://dashboard.parakh.ncert.gov.in/en.
Also, under Vidyanjali, efforts are being made to mobilise individual and CSR volunteers through National and State-level workshops, conduct of Vidyanjali Samman programme for consistent volunteers, sensitisation programme for District, Block, and Cluster Resource Coordinators on Vidyanjali by States/UTs.Further, Government has taken several measures to strengthen community participation in school education by promoting participation through School Management Committees
(SMCs)/School Development Management Committees (SDMCs) as envisaged under the RTE Act 2009, Samagra Shiksha and NEP 2020. Further, initiatives such as Vidyanjali facilitate the participation of parents, alumni, volunteers and local experts in supporting academic and co- curricular activities and augmenting school resources. These measures foster community ownership, transparency and accountability, thereby contributing to the overall strengthening of school education.
