INITIATIVES TO ENSURE FOOD AND NUTRITION SECURITY

Will the Minister of Agriculture and Farmers Welfare be pleased to state:
(a) the initiatives taken by Government under National Food Security and Nutrition Mission
(NFSNM) to ensure food and nutrition security in the country, the details of allocation during the
last three years, State-wise;
(b) the details of assistance being provided to farmers for cultivation of foodgrain crops; and
(c) whether Government has taken any steps/measures to promote bio fortified varieties of rice and
wheat, if so, the details thereof?

(a) to (c): The Department of Agriculture and Farmers Welfare (DA&FW) is implementing the
National Food Security & Nutrition Mission (NFSNM) in the 28 States and 2 Union Territories (UTs)
with the objective to increase production of Rice, Wheat, Coarse Cereals (Maize & Barley),
Commercial Crops (Cotton, Jute & Sugarcane) and Nutri-Cereals (Shree Anna) through area expansion
and productivity enhancement. Earlier the Pulses crops were also covered under the scheme and are
now promoted under the mission for Aatmanirbharata in Pulses. The details of Allocation of funds
under National Food Security and Nutrition Mission to the States/UTs from 2022-23 to 2024-25 is
annexed.
Under NFSNM, assistance is being provided to the farmers, through the States/UTs, for
demonstration on crop production & protection technologies, for distribution of certified seeds, for
production of certified seeds (Nutri-cereals), for Integrated Nutrient and Pest Management measures,
for capacity building of farmers through cropping system-based trainings etc.; and seed minikits of
newly released varieties/hybrids (Nutri-cereals), are also distributed through the states by agencies.
The mission also provides support to Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR) & State
Agricultural Universities (SAUs)/Krishi Vigyan Kendras (KVKs) for technology back stopping and
transfer of technology to the farmer under supervision of Subject Matter Specialists/Scientists.
In order to address the problem of malnutrition, special efforts were initiated during 12th plan
with the launching of a special project on Consortium Research Platform on Biofortification by ICAR.
Concerted efforts has led to the development of 185 bio-fortified varieties in field crops including Rice
(15) and Wheat (73) crops.
Under NFSNM, for the promotion of latest varieties including bio-fortified varieties of Rice
and Wheat, assistance is being provided for conducting demonstrations and seed distribution. A project
for organizing Cluster Frontline Demonstration (CFLDs) on bio-fortified varieties of various crops
including Rice & Wheat by Krishi Vigyan Kendras (KVKs) through Indian Council of Agricultural
Research (ICAR) has been approved under NFSNM for implementation during 2025-26.ANNEXURE
