INSTALLATION OF ADVANCED WEATHER FORECASTING AND
AIR TRAFFIC MANAGEMENT SYSTEMS

Will the Minister of CIVIL AVIATION be pleased to state:-
(a) whether Government proposes to install advanced weather forecasting and air traffic
management systems at airports in cyclone-prone coastal area in the State of Odisha; and
(b) if so, the details thereof?

REGARDING INSTALLATION OF ADVANCED WEATHER FORECASTING AND AIR
TRAFFIC MANAGEMENT SYSTEMS ASKED BY SMT SULATA DEO
(a) & (b): Continuous efforts are being taken by the Government of India to improve the
meteorological infrastructure in Odisha, including the Installation of advanced weather
observations, monitoring & forecasting system at airports in cyclone - prone coastal Odisha.
Currently, Odisha has a total of five operational airports. All these airports have been
supported with advance current weather monitoring Instruments. Further, the airport at
Bhubaneswar is supported with latest Integrated Aviation weather automatic stations and
Runway Visibility Reporting (RVRs) systems for helping flights to land during bad weather
owing to Cyclone, heavy rains, low clouds, poor visibility etc. The State has also been
equipped with state of art Doppler Weather Radar (DWRs) networks with 2 DWR installed at
Paradip and Gopalpur especially to help in monitoring and tracking Cyclones and provide
advance warning over the airports.
A Cyclone Warning Centre (CWC) is functional in IMD, Bhubaneswar to support all
aviation related operations for the State during the cyclone period. All aviation related
bulletins and warnings including cyclone warning, Aerodrome Forecasts & airfield warnings
(local) and area forecast are provided by IMD, Bhubaneswar.
Further, a new Air Traffic Management (ATM) Automation System has been commissioned
at Bhubaneswar Airport on 06.02.2024 by the Airports Authority of India.
