GOVERNMENT OF INDIA MINISTRY OF JAL SHAKTI DEPARTMENT OF DRINKING WATER & SANITATION RAJYA SABHA UNSTARRED QUESTION NO. 4067 ANSWERED ON 30/03/2026 JJM FOR PROVISION OF SAFE DRINKING WATER 4067 SHRI NEERAJ SHEKHAR: Will the Minister of JAL SHAKTI be pleased to state: (a) whether Government has recently approved ₹ 1.51 lakh crores for Jal Jeevan Mission (JJM) for provision of safe drinking water in rural areas; (b) if so, the details thereof and the details of projects to be undertaken therefrom; and (c) the number of households that have been provided tapped drinking water in the country as on date, State-wise? ANSWER THE MINISTER OF STATE FOR JAL SHAKTI (SHRI V. SOMANNA) (a) to (c) To enable every rural household in the country to have assured potable water, in adequate quantity of prescribed quality on regular and long-term basis, through tap water connection, since August 2019, Government of India in partnership with states, is implementing Jal Jeevan Mission (JJM) - Har Ghar Jal. At the start the Mission, only 3.23 Crore (16.7%) rural households were reported to have tap water connections. So far, as reported by States/ UTs as on 03.03.2026, under JJM more than 12.58 Crore additional rural households have been provided with tap water connections. Thus, as on 03.03.2026, out of around 19.36 Crore rural households in the country, around 15.82 Crore (81.71%) households are reported to have tap water supply in their homes. The Year-wise, State/ UT-wise status of tap water connection provided under the Mission in rural areas is in public domain and available on JJM dashboard at: https://ejalshakti.gov.in/jjmreport/JJMIndia.aspx With aim to complete the ongoing works and facilitate the certification of all Gram Panchayats as ‘Har Ghar Jal’, Government has approved extension of Jal Jeevan Mission (JJM) period up to December 2028 with enhanced outlay and restructured implementation focusing on structural reforms in rural drinking water supply sector under JJM 2.0. The total financial outlay of the Mission has enhanced from ₹3.60 lakh crore to ₹8.69 lakh crore, with the central share increasing from ₹2.08 lakh crore to₹ 3.59 lakh crore, i.e. by Rs. 1.51 lakh Crore. *****
