Parliament Question: Limit of 100-Meter Construction Restriction Area in Chandrapur

GOVERNMENT OF INDIA MINISTRY OF CULTURE LOK SABHA UNSTARRED QUESTION NO.1351 ANSWERED ON 27.07.2026 LIMIT OF 100-METER CONSTRUCTION RESTRICTION AREA IN CHANDRAPUR †1351. SMT. DHANORKAR PRATIBHA SURESH: Will the Minister of CULTURE be pleased to state: (a) whether the Government has any plan under consideration to reduce the limit of the currently applicable 100-meter construction prohibition zone to 30 meters, in view of the extremely dense population in the historical 'Parkota' (fort wall) premises of Chandrapur (Maharashtra); (b) whether the Government is aware that due to this restrictive/onerous condition, it has become difficult for the local citizens to repair their houses and avail the benefits of the 'Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana' and if so, the details of remedial measures being planned in this regard; and (c) the details of the steps taken/being taken by the Government to provide special relaxation for Chandrapur city in the Ancient Monuments and Archaeological Sites and Remains Act, in order to strike a balance between the conservation of historical heritage and the fundamental rights of the local citizens? ANSWER THE MINISTER OF CULTURE AND TOURISM (SHRI GAJENDRA SINGH SHEKHAWAT) (a) At present, there is no such proposal to reduce the existing 100-metre Prohibited Area to 30 metres in respect of the historical 'Parkota' (fort wall) at Chandrapur, Maharashtra, under consideration. (b) Under the provisions of the Ancient Monuments and Archaeological Sites and Remains Act, 1958 (AMASR Act) repair or renovation of eligible existing buildings in the Prohibited Area and construction, reconstruction, repair or renovation in the Regulated Area are permitted with the prior permission of the Competent Authority, in accordance with the provisions of the AMASR Act and the Rules made there under. Applications are considered on a case-to-case basis while ensuring the protection and preservation of protected monuments and sites (areas) of national importance. (c) The AMASR Act does not envisage any separate provision for granting special relaxation to any city. *****
