LOSSES DUE TO IMPOSITION OF HIGHER TARIFFS

be pleased to state:
(a) whether the agriculture sector in India has suffered losses due to the imposition of
higher tariffs by the United States on Indian agricultural exports;
(b) if so, the estimated extent of such losses;
(c) whether the Government has taken up the issue with the United States to seek tariff
relaxation or compensation; and
(d) the steps being taken by the Government to protect the interests of Indian farmers
and exporters affected by these measures?

(a) & (b): The Government has been closely monitoring developments in US trade policy
and the performance of India’s agricultural and allied exports. As per latest data available
from Directorate General of Commercial Intelligence and Statistics (DGCIS), India’s export s
of agricultural and allied products to the USA have increased to 2830.79 Million USD in FY
2025-26 (Apr-Sep) from 2818.62 Million USD in the same period of previous year.
(c) & (d): India and the US are currently negotiating a Bilateral Trade Agreement, through
which inter-alia both sides seek to reduce tariff barriers to trade in a mutually beneficial
manner. The Government continues to work on a comprehensive strategy encompassingintensive engagement with the US Government for a mutually beneficial India-US Bilateral
Trade Agreement, enhancement of domestic demand through next generation GST
reforms, Export Promotion measures which provide support and assistance to our exporters
(such as the Export Promotion Mission, Credit Guarantee Scheme for Exporters and Trade
Relief Measures of RBI), pursuing FTAs with new countries, better utilization of existing
FTAs and market access and intelligence measures. It is expected that these measures will
also enhance diversification and resilience in India’s trade relationships. Government is
committed to secure and advance country’s national interest and protect the welfare of our
farmers, workers, entrepreneurs, exporters, MSMEs and all sections of industry and take all
necessary steps to enhance trade including through appropriate export promotion and trade
diversification measures.
