(a) whether India is the leading mango producing country in the world, if so, the details
thereof;
(b) whether the Government proposes to constitute 'Mango Development Board' for
scientific production, marketing, export, research and value addition of mango;
(c) if so, the present status of its constitution along with the proposed area of work in this
regard; and
(d) whether the Government proposes to include various traditional and scientific varieties
of mango under the MSP list so as to ensure stable income and financial security for the
mango producers, if so, the details thereof?

(a): India is the largest producer of mango in the world with production of 228.37
Lakh Tonnes (2nd estimate 2024-25) , which is around 40-45 percent of world mango
production. The details of area and production of mango for the last five years are
given at Annexure.
(b) & (c): There is no such proposal for establishment of Mango Board. However,
Government of India is focusing on scientific cultivation & research of mango,
marketing & export and value addition. Under this, Ministry of Agriculture and
Farmers Welfare, Government of India implements Mission for Integrated
Development of Horticulture (MIDH) in all states and Union Territories which offers a
holistic approach for development of horticulture crops including mango for
production of quality planting material, area expansion, Post-harvest Management,
Primary processing and creation of Marketing Infrastructure etc. Assistance is also
provided for establishment of packhouses and infrastructures for promotion of export
by MIDH, National Horticulture Board (NHB), Agriculture Infrastructure Fund (AIF)
and Agricultural & Processed Food Products Export Development Authority
(APEDA). Besides this, other flagship programmes like Rashtriya Krishi Vikas Yojna
(RKVY), Pradhan Mantri Fasal Beema Yojna, RKVY- Per drop more crop under the
Ministry directly or indirectly supports the promotion and development of mango in
the country.
Further, Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR) has dedicated
organizations for research and development related to mango viz. Central Institute of
Subtropical Horticulture (CISH), Lucknow, Indian Institute of Horticultural Research
(IIHR), Bengaluru and Indian Agricultural Research Institute (IARI), which have
developed various varieties for commercial cultivation in India. Currently, ICAR is also
running 23 All India Coordinated Research Project (AICRP) Centre in mango. Along
with ICAR, State Agricultural Universities are also engaged in research work related
to production, post-harvest management & value addition in mango.
(d): The Government fixes Minimum Support Prices (MSPs) for twenty-two (22)
mandated crops based on the recommendations of the Commission for Agricultural
Costs & Prices (CACP). The Mango crop is not included among these twenty-two
(22) mandated crops.
However, to provide remunerative price to the farmers, Government
implements Market Intervention Scheme (MIS), a component under Pradhan MantriAnnadata Sanrakshan Abhiyan (PM-AASHA), for procurement of agricultural and
horticultural commodities, which are perishable in nature and are not covered under
the Price Support Scheme (PSS). The objective of intervention is to protect the
growers of these commodities from making distress sale in the event of a bumper
crop during the peak arrival period when the prices tend to fall below economic
levels. The scheme is implemented at the request of a State/ Union Territory (UT)
government, which is ready to bear 50 percent of the loss (25 percent in case of
North-Eastern States), if any, incurred on its implementation.
Government has introduced a new component of Price Differential Payment
(PDP) under Market Intervention Scheme (MIS) from 2024-25 season for direct
payment of the price difference between the Market Intervention Price (MIP) and the
selling price to the farmers of perishable crops. States/ UTs have an option to choose
either to do physical procurement of the crop or to make the differential payment
between the MIP & Sale Price to the farmers. Department of Agriculture and Farmers
Welfare approves procurement of Mangoes at Market Intervention Price (MIP) under
Market Intervention Scheme (MIS) on the request of States/UTs when the market
prices fall below the MIP.Annexure
