(a) the total number of medical colleges currently operating across the country, State/UT-wise
particularlyinHimachalPradesh;
(b) the number of these medical colleges operating in Himachal Pradesh that are functioning in
their permanent buildings/campuses along with the number of colleges running in temporary or
otherbuildings;
(c) whether some medical colleges do not have their permanent buildings available and if so, the
reasons therefor;
(d) the time limit prescribed and action plan chalked out by the Government for the construction
of permanentbuildings; and
(e) the current status of the Medical Colleges in Sirmaur district of the Shimla Parliamentary
constituency?

(a) As informed by the National Medical Commission (NMC), there are a total of 818 medical
colleges, including(AIIMS andINIs), across the countryasof now. The State/UT-wise detailsof
these medicalcolleges are at Annexure.
(b) to (e) The Ministry of Health & Family Welfare administers a Centrally Sponsored Scheme
(CSS) for ‘Establishment of new medical colleges attached with existing district/referral
hospitals’ with preference to underserved areas and aspirational districts, where there is no
existing Government or private medical college. The fund sharing mechanism between the
Centre and State Governments is in the ratio of 90:10 for North Eastern and Special Category
States, and 60:40 for others. Under the Scheme, all the envisaged 157 medical colleges have
been approved in three phases, including 03 medical colleges in Himachal Pradesh at Chamba,
Hamirpur and Nahan. All the three medical colleges are functional. As per guidelines of the
Scheme, the planning, execution and commissioning of the medical colleges approved under the
scheme is to be done by the State Government. Further, as informed by the State Government,
project of Sirmaur Medical College suffered disruptions due to dispute between contractor and
executingagency.
