NATIONAL SERVICE SCHEME
3193 SHRI IRANNA KADADI:
Will the Minister of YOUTH AFFAIRS AND SPORTS be pleased to state:-
(a) the state-wise details of students currently enrolled under National Service Scheme (NSS)
and the steps taken to increase participation across schools and colleges;
(b) the community service activities conducted under NSS and how they address pressing
social issues such as health, education and environmental conservation;
(c) the steps taken to ensure inclusivity by engaging students from economically weaker
sections, remote areas and marginalized communities under NSS; and
(d) the details of beneficiaries impacted by NSS activities across various sectors?

(a) The details of state-wise students currently enrolled under National Service Scheme (NSS)
is attached at Annexure ‘A’.
In order to increase participation across Schools and Colleges there is provision of Self-
Funding Units. The institutions setting up the SFUs would need to raise necessary resources
for running of the NSS unit on their own. Such institutions could, if necessary, charge a
nominal fee for NSS programme activities. Funds could also be mobilized through CSR
activities of corporate sector. Funds could be mobilized from any other legitimate source as
well. Such institutions shall follow the financial norms and accounting procedures of NSS, as
applicable to other NSS units.
(b) NSS community service activities focus on rural and slum development, environmental
conservation, health awareness, and education, requiring 120 hours of service annually from
volunteers, including a 7-day special camp. Key activities include plantation drives, blood
donation camps, literacy programs, and Swachh Bharat cleanliness campaigns
Environmental Conservation: Tree plantation campaigns, waste management, and
plastic awareness drives.
Health and Hygiene: Organizing blood donation camps, health check-ups, and
awareness campaigns for AIDS, hygiene, and nutrition.
Education and Literacy: Conducting adult education programs, functional literacy
campaigns, and teaching underprivileged children.
Page 1 of 3 Community Development & Infrastructure: Adopting villages or slums for
development, including cleaning, sanitation, constructing drainage,etc
Social Awareness: Organizing rallies and workshops on issues like gender equality,
voter registration, drug abuse, and road safety.
(c) NSS aims to empower young people by promoting social mobility, reducing
educational gaps, and equipping them with practical skills. Through its institutional and
community platforms, the Department of Youth Affairs seeks to ensure that opportunities reach
youth across regions and socio-economic backgrounds, fostering an inclusive and equitable
ecosystem for their development.
(d) The beneficiaries impacted by NSS activities are Students, Society. The NSS
Volunteers take part in various activities across different sectors are Republic Day Parade
Camp, Independence Day Ceremony participation, Veer Bal Diwas participation, Sardar@150
Unity March, Kargil Vijay Diwas Padyatra, Viksit Bharat Young Leaders Dialogue, MY
Bharat - NSS Awards, Viksit Bharat Yuva Connect Programme, Constitution Day, Yoga Day,
Voter Awareness, Adventure Camp, National Integration Camp, North East NSS Festival.
