Parliament Question: Progress of Belagavi airport

GOVERNMENT OF INDIA MINISTRY OF CIVIL AVIATION RAJYA SABHA UNSTARRED QUESTION NO. : 178 TO BE ANSWERED ON THE 2nd February 2026 PROGRESS OF BELAGAVI AIRPORT 178. SHRI IRANNA KADADI Will the Minister of CIVIL AVIATION be pleased to state:- (a) the physical and financial progress of the new integrated terminal building construction at Belagavi airport (IXG) as on January, 2026; (b) the status of the runway extension work to facilitate the operation of wide-body aircraft like Airbus A321 and Boeing 737 for international operations; (c) the details of the new routes awarded under UDAN 5.0 connecting Belagavi with major economic hubs like Pune, Chennai and Mangaluru; and (d) the timeline for operationalization of the new terminal and the projected increase in passenger handling capacity? ANSWER Minister of State in the Ministry of CIVIL AVIATION (Shri Murlidhar Mohol) (a): The Airports Authority of India (AAI) has undertaken the construction of a new terminal building and allied works at Belagavi Airport. As on date, the physical progress of the project is 71.5%, and the financial progress is Rs.158.27 crore. The extension of Runway is contingent upon assessment of traffic demand and availability of land. (b): Belagavi Airport is a domestic airport and is currently operating A320-type aircraft. Commencement of international operations from any airport depends on factors such as traffic potential, demand from the State Government or airlines for international flight operations. Accordingly, the decision to extend the runway to accommodate wide body aircraft for international operations is undertaken. Presently there is no such proposal under consideration. (c): During the UDAN 5.0 bidding round, the routes connecting Belagavi with major economic hubs such as Pune, Chennai, and Mangaluru were not eligible for bidding, as Belagavi and all the airports involved in these routes are served airports and therefore, do not fall under the purview of the Regional Connectivity Scheme. (d): The new terminal building, with a capacity to handle 3.5 million passengers per annum (MPPA), is projected to be completed by the end of April, 2026, with an additional period of approximately one month required for operationalization. However, the timeline for completion of the airport projects depends upon many factors such as land acquisition, availability of mandatory clearances, financial closure etc. ******
