Promoting Sports and Physical Fitness in Gujarat
1341. Smt. Poonamben Hematbhai Maadam:
Will the Minister of YOUTH AFFAIRS AND SPORTS be pleased to state:
(a) whether the Government has taken initiatives to promote sports and
physical fitness in Gujarat;
(b) if so, details thereof;
(c) the details of the schemes implemented by the Government for the
development of sports infrastructure and youth programmes across the
country, state/UT-wise; and
(d) the details of the number of sports infrastructure projects sanctioned
in Gujarat under schemes such as Khelo India?
ANSWER
THE MINISTER OF YOUTH AFFAIRS & SPORTS

(a) to (c) ‘Sports’ being a State subject, the responsibility for
development of sports, including promotion of sports and physical
fitness and development of sports infrastructure, rests primarily with the
respective State/Union Territory Governments. The Union Government
supplements their efforts by bridging critical gaps. The Ministry of Youth
Affairs and Sports implements the following schemes for promotion of
sports in the country, including in the State of Gujarat:
(i) Khelo India – National Programme for Development of Sports;
(ii) Assistance to National Sports Federations (NSFs);
(iii) Cash Incentives to Medal Winners in International Sports Events
and their Coaches;
(iv) National Sports Awards;
(v) Pension to Meritorious Sportspersons;
Page 1 of 2(vi) Pandit Deendayal Upadhyay National Welfare Program for
Sportspersons;
(vii) National Sports Development Fund;
(viii) Running Sports Training Centres through Sports Authority of
India (SAI); and
(ix) National Centre for Sports Science and Research (NCSSR).
Details of the above schemes are available in the public domain on the
websites of this Ministry and the Sports Authority of India.
In addition, the “Fit India Movement” component of the Khelo India
Scheme aims to encourage citizens to adopt healthy lifestyles through
regular physical activity, and promotes fitness awareness at the
grassroots level via initiatives such as Fit India Week, Fit India Freedom
Run, Fit India Quiz, and the Fit India Mobile App. The Movement has
significantly contributed to fostering a culture of health and fitness
among youth and the wider community across the country, including in
the State of Gujarat.
Further, the Ministry of Youth Affairs & Sports implements the following
schemes to promote youth programmes across the country, including in
the States of Gujarat:
(i) Mera Yuva Bharat (MY Bharat);
(ii) Nehru Yuva Kendra Sangathan (NYKS); and
(iii) National Service Scheme (NSS)
(d) The details of the sports infrastructure projects approved and their
sanctioned cost, funds released and their physical and financial
progress, under the Khelo India Scheme and National Sports
Development Funds (NSDF), across the country, including in the State of
Gujarat, are available in public domain on the dashboards of the Ministry

glance.html, respectively.
