Parliament Question: Promotion of Tourism in Less-explored Regions

GOVERNMENT OF INDIA MINISTRY OF TOURISM LOK SABHA UNSTARRED QUESTION NO.185 ANSWERED ON 21.07.2025 PROMOTION OF TOURISM IN LESS-EXPLORED REGION 185. SHRI K RADHAKRISHNAN: Will the Minister of TOURISM be pleased to state: (a) whether the Government has any targeted plan to promote domestic tourism in less-explored regions of the country, especially in tribal and backward areas; (b) if so, the details thereof; and (c) the details of the steps taken/being taken by the Government to improve basic infrastructure like roads, sanitation and connectivity in such regions? ANSWER THE MINISTER OF TOURISM (SHRI GAJENDRA SINGH SHEKHAWAT) (a) to (c): Development and promotion of tourist destinations and tourism products is primarily undertaken by the respective State Government/Union Territory (UT) Administration. However, the Ministry of Tourism through its central sector schemes of ‘Swadesh Darshan(SD)’, Swadesh Darshan 2.0 (SD2.0), ‘Challenge Based Destination Development (CBDD)’ – a sub-scheme of Swadesh Darshan, ‘Pilgrimage Rejuvenation and Spiritual, Heritage Augmentation Drive (PRASHAD)’ and ‘Assistance to Central Agencies for Tourism Infrastructure Development’ schemes (ACA) is complementing the efforts of tourism infrastructure development by extending financial assistance to the State Governments/UT Administrations. In addition, Government of India under its initiative for ‘Special Assistance to States for Capital Investment (SASCI)’ has also provided financial assistance to the States for development of tourism projects. The projects sanctioned under the above-mentioned schemes have been sanctioned in various States/UTs of the country including less-explored regions and tribal and backward areas. Details of sanctioned projectsunder the SD, SD2.0, CBDD, PRASHAD, ACA and SASCI schemes is annexed. The projects sanctioned under the above-mentioned schemes cover components related to basic tourism amenities/ infrastructure as well as tourism experiences & products such as last mile connectivity, sewage treatment plants, e-vehicles, wash and change rooms, parking, public convenience, waste management, cafeteria, open air theatres, illumination, trails, facilitation centres etc. With the aim to promote tourism in tribal areas, the Ministry of Tourism has also issued guidelines for 'Development of Homestays in Tribal Areas' along with template for formulation of proposal to develop tribal homestays to the State Governments and UT Administrations.
