Parliament Question: Recognition of National Sports Federations

GOVERNMENT OF INDIA MINISTRY OF YOUTH AFFAIRS AND SPORTS (DEPARTMENT OF SPORTS) RAJYA SABHA UNSTARRED QUESTION NO- 799 ANSWERED ON-05/02/2026 RECOGNITION OF NATIONAL SPORTS FEDERATIONS 799 SHRI SADANAND MHALU SHET TANAVADE: Will the Minister of YOUTH AFFAIRS AND SPORTS be pleased to state: (a) the number of National-Sports-Federations (NSFs) registered in the country, as per the latest records, the number recognized by Government and those affiliated with the Indian Olympic Association and the respective international federations, discipline-wise; (b) the budgetary-allocations made during the last five years to recognized NSFs towards capacity building, infrastructure-support and development programme and the utilization status thereof; (c) the measures taken to streamline the affiliation of NSFs with international bodies to enhance India’s presence in global competitions; and (d) whether Government proposes performance-linked support and monitoring mechanisms to strengthen un-recognized sports federations and ensure broader sporting excellence across the country? ANSWER THE MINISTER OF YOUTH AFFAIRS AND SPORTS (DR. MANSUKH MANDAVIYA) (a) National Sports Federations (NSFs) are voluntary bodies registered under the Societies Registration Act, 1860/ Trusts Act/ Companies Act. The Ministry of Youth Affairs & Sports recognizes NSFs at the national level for promotion and development of sports as per the laid down criteria in the National Sports Development Code of India, 2011 (“Sports Code”). As per the Sports Code, NSFs are fully responsible and accountable for the overall management, direction, control, regulation, promotion, development and sponsorship of the discipline for which they are recognized by the concerned International Federation. The Government recognition of NSFs is renewed on year to year basis. A total 53 NSFs were lastly recognised Page 1 of 5as on 31.12.2025. Details of recognized NSFs along with the affiliation status with IOA and respective international federation, sports discipline-wise are given at Annexure. (b) to (d) The Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports through the Scheme of Assistance to NSFs provides financial assistance to recognized NSFs towards training of athletes which includes all requisite facilities for their preparations including wholesome nutritious diet, food supplements, equipment support, state-of-the-art infrastructure, lodging, travelling facilities, services of reputed Indian and foreign coaches/supporting staff, scientific & medical support, sports kit, etc. besides financial assistance for their training abroad and participation in international competitions in India and abroad. The plans / proposals of the NSFs relating to training, competitive exposure, coaches and support personnel including foreign coaches, for preparing sportspersons/teams for the international events including mega-sports events are deliberated and finalized in the Annual Calendar for Training and Competition (ACTC) meetings.
