Will the Minister of JAL SHAKTI be pleased to state:
(a) the number of schemes/projects currently being implemented in major towns under Shahdol Lok Sabha
Constituency, such as Shahdol, Anuppur and Umaria, related to Sewage Treatment Plants (STPs), industrial
pollution management (CETPs/ETPs) and conservation of floodplains/waterbodies;
(b) the specific and time-bound measures being taken by the Government for redressal of pollution in the
Son river and its tributaries caused by Bilaspur-Katni industrial corridor and coal mining areas; and
(c) whether any particular scheme has been prepared for the rejuvenation of major rivers flowing through
Shahdol Lok Sabha Constituency, particularly the Son river or its tributaries such as Johilla river and if so,
the details and main objectives thereof?

(a) As per information made available by the State Government of Madhya Pradesh, five sewage projects
comprising six Sewage Treatment Plants (STPs) with a total capacity of 23.85 MLD under various
Government schemes like SBM 2.0 etc. are at various stages of implementation in major towns under the
Shahdol Lok Sabha Constituency, including Shahdol, Anuppur, Kotma and Manpur.
Under AMRUT in ShahdolLok Sabha Constituency for Katni city 02 sewerage/septage management
projects worth Rs. 121.5 crore have been approved.
Under Atal Mission for Rejuvenation and Urban Transformation (AMRUT) 2.0, the proposal of the
State for one sewerage/septage management project worth ₹38.5 crore in Murwara (Katni City) and 27
water body rejuvenation projects worth ₹21.33 in Shahdol Lok Sabha Constituency have been approved.
The details of the projects are enclosed as Annexure.
(b) & (c) Cleaning of rivers is an ongoing process. This Ministry along with other Union Ministries and
associated agencies supplements the efforts of State Governments in river conservation and pollution
abatement activities.
CPCB identifies polluted river stretches in the rivers across the country in association with State
Pollution Control Boards (SPCB) and Pollution Control Committees (PCCs) under National Water Quality
Monitoring Programme. Central Pollution Control Board/State Pollution Control Board (CPCB/SPCB)
1monitors river water quality to ensure compliance of the provisions of the Environment Protection Act, 1986
and Water (Prevention & Control of Pollution) Act, 1974.
To reduce the environmental pollution, including, water pollution and the land degradation, caused
by coal mining activities, Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change (MoEF&CC) has notified
the Environment Impact Assessment (EIA) Notification, 2006 under the Environment (Protection) Act,
1986, which deals with the process of granting Environmental Clearance (EC) after having comprehensive
analysis of EIA reports prepared by the coal companies. The coal mining projects are required to obtain the
prior Environment Clearance under the EIA, Notification 2006.
Environmental standards have been prescribed for the coal mines. The respective SPCBs/PCCs issue
the Consent to Operate under the provisions of Air (Prevention and Control of Air Pollution) Act, 1981 and
Water (Prevention and Control of Pollution) Act, 1974 to oversee the compliance of emissions/effluent
standards and take action against violators under the provision of said Water and Air Acts.
The State prepares the action plan for rejuvenation of polluted river stretches in compliance with the
directions of the National Green Tribunal (NGT). These action plans are monitored periodically by the State
River Rejuvenation Committee (SRRC) and Central Monitoring Committee (CMC).
