Parliament Question: Road connectivity between Machil and Tangdhar via Keran

GOVERNMENT OF INDIA MINISTRY OF ROAD TRANSPORT AND HIGHWAYS RAJYA SABHA UNSTARRED QUESTION NO - 2180 ANSWERED ON – 11/03/2026 ROAD CONNECTIVITY BETWEEN MACHIL AND TANGDHAR VIA KERAN 2180 Shri Chowdry Mohammad Ramzan : Will the Minister of ROAD TRANSPORT AND HIGHWAYS be pleased to state: (a) whether Government is aware that there is currently no direct all-weather road connecting Machil and Tangdhar via Keran, which significantly affects civilian movement, trade and strategic access in this border area of Kupwara district; (b) whether any surveys, DPRs or proposals have been prepared for constructing or upgrading this crucial road, including timelines for completion, pending approvals and funding allocations; and (c) the steps Government is taking to ensure year-round connectivity and improve infrastructure for the people and border security forces in this region? ANSWER THE MINISTER OF ROAD TRANSPORT AND HIGHWAYS (SHRI NITIN JAIRAM GADKARI) (a) to (c) The Government in Ministry of Road Transport & Highways is primarily responsible for development and maintenance of National Highways(NHs)/ National Expressway in the country. The Government receives proposals from various State Governments / Union Territories (UTs), including from the UT of Jammu and Kashmir, from time to time, for declaration / upgradation of State Roads, including State Highways (SHs), as new NHs. Decisions are taken to notify NHs from time to time based on the broad principles of declaration of NHs, requirement of connectivity, traffic density and synergy with PM Gati Shakti National Master Plan (NMP) and on strategic grounds. *****
