Parliament Question: Set up of Medical Colleges in Odisha

SHRIRUDRANARAYANPANY: Will the Ministerof HEALTH AND FAMILYWELFAREbe pleasedtostate: (a) whether the policy of the Government to set up medical colleges in each district of the countryisstill ineffect andif so, the detailsthereof; (b) the total number of districts in which medical colleges and hospitals are functioning at present; (c) whether the Government provides any incentives to medical colleges and hospital set up bythe StateGovernments; (d) if so, the detailsthereof,State/UT-wise particularlyinOdisha; and (e) whether the State Government of Odisha proposes to provide any special package to medicalcolleges andhospitals tobe openedinDhenkanal andif so, the detailsthereof? ANSWER THE MINISTER OFSTATE IN THE MINISTRYOFHEALTH AND FAMILY WELFARE (SMT. ANUPRIYAPATEL) (a) to (e): The Ministry of Health & Family Welfare administers a Centrally Sponsored Scheme (CSS) for ‘Establishment of new medical colleges attached with existing district/referral hospitals’ with preference to underserved areas and aspirational districts, where there is no existing Government or private medical college. The fund sharing mechanism between the Centre and State Governments is in the ratio of 90:10 for North Eastern and Special Category States, and 60:40 for others. Under the Scheme, all the envisaged 157 Government Medical Colleges have been approved in the country including seven (07) medical colleges (Balasore, Baripada (Mayurbhanj), Bolangir, Koraput, Puri in Phase-I, Jajpur in Phase-II & Kalahandi in Phase-III) in Odisha. Of these, 139 medical collegeshave become functional,includingallseven approvedmedical collegesinOdisha. Further, Government Medical College (GMC) at Dhenkanal, Odisha is a State fundedproject. ******
