Sports Academics Operated across the Country
187. Shri Appalanaidu Kalisetti:
Will the Minister of YOUTH AFFAIRS AND SPORTS be pleased to
state:
(a) the number of Central and State Government-run sports
academies currently operational across the country, State/UT-wise;
(b) the details of the sanctioned strength, current deployment and
vacancies of coaches and technical staff in these academies, gender-
wise including representation of women, SCs, STs, minorities and
Persons with Disabilities (PwDs);
(c) whether the Government has prescribed any coach-to-athlete
ratio for these academies, and if so, the details thereof;
(d) the number of skill development and capacity-building
programmes conducted for coaches during the last five years and the
number of coaches certified under these programmes; and
(e) the details of the funds allocated and utilised for recruitment,
training and upskilling of the coaches during the last five years and
the current year, State/UT-wise?
ANSWER
THE MINISTER OF YOUTH AFFAIRS & SPORTS
[DR. MANSUKH MANDAVIYA](a): At present, a total of 306 academies have been accredited for the
training of Khelo India Athletes (KIAs) under Khelo India Scheme. The
details of sports academies is at Annexure-I.
(b): Against sanctioned strength of 1,096 Past Champion Athletes
(PCAs) as coaches, 951 PCAs have been deployed and 145 posts are
vacant under Khelo India scheme and the detail maintained is at
Annexure - II.
(c) to (e): In Khelo India Centre (KIC), the coach-to-athlete ratio is
1:30. In Khelo India State Centre of Excellence (KISCE), the coach is
deployed as per custom support required for each state and the
number of coaches ranges from 4 to 12 per KISCE.
Skill development and capacity-building programmes are conducted
for Past Champion Athletes (hired as coaches) through Netaji Subhas
National Institute of Sports (NSNIS), Patiala from time to time. The
detail of such course is as follows:

The Past Champion Athletes (PCAs) appointed as coaches at Khelo
India Centres (KICs) across India were provided capacity building
training under a centrally organised Capacity Building Program. This
program is continued in phase wise manner under hybrid model
(online and offline) to ensure accessible and standardised training
across all States and Union Territories. A financial sanction of
₹3,24,53,800/- was granted for Capacity Building Program for a total
of 1,295 PCAs at various Khelo India Centres. However, the State/UT-
wise data is not maintained in the Ministry.
