STATUS AND IMPACT OF IMPLEMENTATION OF NAMAMI GANGE PROGRAMME IN
UTTAR PRADESH

Will the Minister of JAL SHAKTI be pleased to state:
(a) the number of projects approved in the State of Uttar Pradesh under Namami Gange Programme since the year
2024 till date and the details of the amount sanctioned and expended;
(b) the total number of Sewage Treatment Plants (STPs) established in the State and their present operational
capacity;
(c) the present status of Ganga water quality as compared to the year 2014, particularly in Varanasi, Prayagraj and
Kanpur; and
(d) whether any time-bound action plan has been formulated to achieve the goal of "Zero Untreated Sewage into
Ganga", if so, the timeline thereof?

(a) Under the Namami Gange Programme (NGP), in the State of Uttar Pradesh, a total of 11 projects have been
sanctioned from January 2024 to till date at a total cost of ₹2,044 crore, aimed at reducing pollution load with a
treatment capacity of 353 MLD.
(b) A total of 98 sewage treatment plants have been sanctioned in Uttar Pradesh under the Namami Gange
Programme. Out of these, 56 sewage treatment plants have been established, with a cumulative operational treatment
capacity of 1,364 MLD.
(c) Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB) carries out assessment of water quality of river Ganga at 41 manual
water quality monitoring locations under National Water Quality Monitoring Programme (NWMP) in the state of
Uttar Pradesh through Uttar Pradesh Pollution Control Board on fortnightly basis.
As per the Polluted River Stretch (PRS) Report, 2015 by CPCB, monitoring locations of the River Ganga from
Kannauj to Varanasi were classified under PRS Priority Class III (BOD: 10–20 mg/L). However, as per the 2025
assessment, stretch from Bijnore to Tarighat, Ghazipur is in Priority class V (3-6 mg/l) and river Ganga at Kanpur D/s
(Jana village) & at Road Bridge Tarighat Distt Ghazipur/Manjhighat (interstate locations) is in Priority IV (6-10
mg/l), indicating a significant improvement in water quality.
(d) The cleaning of the river is an ongoing process, and this Ministry is supplementing the efforts of the States to
check the rising levels of pollution in the River Ganga and its tributaries by providing financial and technical
assistance. The various projects aimed at the rejuvenation of the River Ganga and its tributaries are at different stages
of planning/construction/completion, and are closely monitored at multiple levels to ensure timely completion.
