ANSWER
THE MINISTER OF STATE FOR JAL SHAKTI
(SHRI V. SOMANNA)
(a) & (b) Drinking water is a State subject. The power to plan, design, approve and implement
drinking water supply schemes/projects lies with State/UT Government. Government of India,
in partnership with States/UTs is implementing Jal Jeevan Mission, since August, 2019, to
make provision of tap water supply of prescribed quality on a regular and long-term basis to
every rural household.
Significant progress has been made in the country since the launch of Jal Jeevan Mission,
towards enhancing access to tap water to rural households. At the start of Jal Jeevan Mission
in August 2019, only 3.23 crore (16.72%) rural households were reported to have tap water
connections. As on 20.07.2026, out of 19.36 crore rural households in the country, more than
15.89 crore (82.10%) households are reported to have tap water connections in their homes.
Dadra Nagar Haveli & Daman Diu had reported in 2022 that they had provided tap water
connection to all rural households in the UT. (Source: JJM-IMIS).
