Parliament Question: Testing of drinking water samples

SHRI SUKHENDU SEKHAR RAY: Will the Minister of JAL SHAKTI be pleased to state: (a) year-wise number of drinking water samples tested and the number found contaminated, State/UT-wise, during the last three years; (b) the district-wise list of areas flagged repeatedly and the remedial actions taken with timelines; and (c) whether Government will place a public, State/UT-wise dashboard of contaminated-sample trends and action-taken reports and if so, the details thereof? ANSWER THE MINISTER OF STATE FOR JAL SHAKTI (SHRI V. SOMANNA) (a) to (c) The Jal Jeevan Mission (JJM) – Har Ghar Jal, was launched in August 2019, in partnership with States/ UTs to make provision of potable tap water supply in adequate quantity, of prescribed quality and on regular & long-term basis to rural households. Drinking Water being a State subject, the responsibility of Planning, Designing, Approval, Implementation, Operation & Maintenance of drinking water supply schemes, including those under the Jal Jeevan Mission, is vested with State/UT Governments. The Government of India supplements the efforts of the States by providing technical and financial assistance. Under the Jal Jeevan Mission (JJM), to enable States/ UTs to test water samples for water quality, and for sample collection, reporting, monitoring and surveillance of drinking water, an online JJM – Water Quality Management Information System (JJM-WQMIS) portal has been developed. The State–wise details of water quality test reported through WQMIS are available in public domain and can be accessed at: https://ejalshakti.gov.in/WQMIS/Main/report. As reported by States/ UTs on JJM-WQMIS, more than 59 lakh samples during 2023-24 and more than 82 lakh samples during 2024-25 were tested in drinking water quality testing laboratories. So far as on 02.03.2026, during 2025-26, States/ UTs have reported to test more than 63 lakh samples in drinking water quality testing laboratories. As per 'Concise Handbook for Monitoring Water Quality of Piped Drinking Water Supply to Rural Households’ released in December 2024, it is envisaged that based on the geogenic situation and contamination found in a specific region, SWSM should carefully consider and declare the list of parameters that should be included in the water quality monitoring & surveillance activities of PWS for the rural areas. State Water & Sanitation Mission (SWSM) Dashboard and District Water & Sanitation Mission (DWSM) Dashboard have been developed on the JJM-IMIS portal for monitoring of various aspects of progress made under JJM at the State level and District level respectively. Both the Dashboards display water quality monitoring data including reported contaminated samples and remedial action taken. A “Citizen Corner” has also been placed on the JJM Dashboard.
