TRAFFIC CONGESTION AND ACCIDENT-PRONE STRETCHES IN PATNA
587. SHRI AKHILESH PRASAD SINGH:
Will the Minister of ROAD TRANSPORT AND HIGHWAYS be pleased to state :
(a) whether increasing traffic congestion and accident-prone stretches have been identified on
National Highways and major arterial roads passing through Patna;
(b) the number of road accidents and fatalities reported in the district during the last three
years;
(c) whether road safety audits, junction redesign and signage improvements have been
undertaken; and
(d) the steps taken to improve traffic flow, pedestrian safety and coordination with the State
authorities for urban road management?
ANSWER

(a) Government in the Ministry of Road Transport & Highways (MoRT&H) has identified
traffic congestion and accident-prone stretches in the National Highway (NH) Nos. 22, 31,
131G, 139, 139W & 922 passing through city of Patna.
(b) The number of road accidents and fatalities on NH reported in the district during last three
years are 35 and 32 respectively.
(c) Development of National Highways is a continuous process. Road Safety Audits are
carried out at different stages of development of NHs. Accordingly, junction redesign has
been completed on 36 Major Junctions & 10 Minor Junctions and work on 17 Major
Junctions & 62 Minor Junctions are under progress. Signages improvement such as
Information, mandatory & cautionary sign boards have been installed as per IRC (Indian
Road Congress) guidelines.(d) Agencies are undertaking measures to improve traffic flow and pedestrian safety in
coordination with all stakeholders including State authorities on the NH stretches passing
through rural and urban areas. In this regard, following projects are taken up in and around
Patna:
(i) 6-lane Patna Ring Road.
(ii) Elevated road on the Danapur to Bihta section of NH-922.
(iii) Bakhtiyarpur Mokama (green field) highway.
(iv) Patna-Bakhtiyarpur highway.
(v) 6 lane H.L./Extra-dosed Cable Bridge on river Ganga parallel to western side of
Digha- Sonepur Rail-cum-Road Bridge on NH-139W.
(vi) 4-lane Bridge (Parallel to the Existing MG Setu) with the approaches from km
0/000 to km 14/500 across river Ganga on NH-19
