Parliament Question: Transition of Small Steel Units into Green Hydrogen-Ready Technologies

GOVERNMENT OF INDIA MINISTRY OF STEEL LOK SABHA UNSTARRED QUESTION NO. 5256 FOR ANSWER ON 24.03.2026 TRANSITION OF SMALL STEEL UNITS INTO G REEN HYDROGEN-READYT ECHNOLOGIES 5256. ADV PRIYA SAROJ: Will the Minister of STEEL be pleased to state: (a) the number of small & medium steel units identified for technology upgradation under the Union Government’s decarbonisation and green steel initiatives during the last five years in the country, State and district-wise including Uttar Pradesh; (b) the technical and financial assistance extended to such units for adoption of energy- efficient or hydrogen-ready furnace technologies under Central schemes or pilot programmes in the country, State and district-wise including Uttar Pradesh; (c) the assessment undertaken by the Ministry regarding the preparedness of secondary steel producers to transition towards green hydrogen-based production processes; (d) the number of pilot projects or demonstration facilities supported by the Union Government to enable small steel units to shift towards hydrogen-compatible furnaces in the country, State and district-wise including Uttar Pradesh; and (e) the corrective steps proposed by the Union Government to ensure that smaller steel producers are not excluded from the transition to low-carbon and green hydrogen- based steel production? ANSWER THE MINISTER OF STATE IN THE (SHRI BHUPATHIRAJU SRINIVASA VARMA) MINISTRY OF STEEL (a)to(e): The initiatives taken by the Government for adoption of energy-efficient and hydrogen-based steel production across the country including Uttar Pradesh are as under: - i. Ministry of Steel has released a report titled "Greening the Steel Sector in India: Roadmap and Action Plan" in alignment with the recommendations of the 14 Task Forces constituted by this Ministry for this purpose which provides the future roadmap for green steel and sustainability, towards net-zero target by 2070. The report is available on Ministry of Steel's website. ii. Four pilot projects to three steel units with total central financial assistance of Rs.83.376 Crore have been awarded for use of hydrogen in steel sector under National Green Hydrogen Mission launched by Ministry of New & Renewable Energy. The state-wise and district-wise details of awarded projects are enclosed at Annexure-I. Contd…..2/-: 2 : iii. Ministry of Steel notified the Taxonomy for Green Steel on 23.12.2024 to provide standards for defining and categorizing the low emission steel. Under Green Steel Taxonomy Framework, 85 steel units have been awarded green steel certification with star rating, accounting for total green steel production of 14.64 Million tonnes. Majority of such units are small steel producers and the state-wise and district-wise details of such units are enclosed at Annexure-II. iv.
