Parliament Question: UG and PG Seats in Medical College

SHRIJANARDAN SINGH SIGRIWAL: Will the Ministerof HEALTH AND FAMILYWELFAREbe pleasedtostate: (a) whether the Government hastaken steps toincrease the number of medical collegesalong with Undergraduate (UG) and Postgraduate (PG) medical seats in the country during the last five years; (b) if so, the details thereofindicating the increase in the number of medical colleges andUG andPGmedicalseats across the country,year-wise andState/UT-wise; (c) the number of new medical colleges established or approved and the increase in UG and PGmedicalseats inBihar during the last five years, year-wise;and (d) whether the Government has any proposal to further increase the number of medical colleges along with UG and PG medical seats in Bihar and if so, the details thereof, locationwise, alongwith the timelinefor itsimplementation? ANSWER THE MINISTER OFSTATE IN THE MINISTRYOFHEALTH AND FAMILY WELFARE (SMT. ANUPRIYAPATEL) (a) to (d): The Government has significantly increased the number of medical colleges and, consequently, the number of MBBS and PG seats in the country. The number of medical colleges has increased by 118.6%, from 387 before 2014 to 846 at present. Further, the number of MBBS seats has increased by 172.4%, from 51,348 before 2014 to 1,39,864 at present. Similarly, the numberof PGseats hasincreased by176.9%, from 31,185before 2014 to 86,360at present. In Bihar, the number of medical colleges hasincreasedby 35%, from 20 to 27, while the number of MBBS seats has increased by 77.4%, from 2,415 to 4,285 during the last five years. The measures/steps taken by the Government to augment the medical education facilitiesandtoimprove the medicalstandards inthe countryinclude: -i. Centrally Sponsored Scheme (CSS) for establishment of new medical colleges by upgrading district/ referral hospital underwhich 157 new medical collegeshave been approvedincluding08 colleges inBihar. ii. CSS for strengthening/ upgradation of existing State Government/ Central Government medicalcolleges toincrease the numberof MBBS (UG) and PGseats, under which support has been provided for increase of 4977 MBBS seats in 83 colleges with an approved cost of Rs. 5972.20 Cr, 4058 PG seats in phase-I in 72 colleges with an approved cost of Rs. 1498.43cr and 4000PG seats in phase-II in 65 collegeswith anapprovedcost of Rs. 4478.25Cr. iii. Also, Cabinet approved Phase-III of (CSS) for “Strengthening and upgradation of existing State Government/Central Government Medical Colleges/Standalone PG Institutes/Government Hospitals” to facilitate increase of 5000 PG seats with an enhanced cost ceiling of Rs. 1.5 Crore per seats and extension of existing CSS for UG Scheme for 5023 MBBS seats with a enhanced cost of Rs. 1.5 Crore per seats. The timelinefor implementation of boththe Schemeis2028-2029. iv. Under “Upgradation of Government medical colleges by construction of Super Specialty Blocks” component of Pradhan Mantri Swasthya Suraksha Yojana (PMSSY), a total of 75 projects have been approved, of which 71 projects are complete. v. Under the Central Sector Scheme for setting up of new AIIMS, 22 AIIMS have been approved.Undergraduate courses have started in19of these. ******
