Parliament Question: Upgradation of Mangaluru Central Railway Station as World Class Railway Station

GOVERNMENT OF INDIA MINISTRY OF RAILWAYS LOK SABHA UNSTARRED QUESTION NO. 5333 TO BE ANSWERED ON 25.03.2026 UPGRADATION OF MANGALURU CENTRAL RAILWAY STATION AS WORLD CLASS RAILWAY STATION 5333. SHRI CAPTAIN BRIJESH CHOWTA: Will the Minister of RAILWAYS be pleased to state: (a) whether Mangaluru Central railway station was identified for development as a “World Class Railway Station” and if so, the details of the proposal and estimated investment made; (b) the steps taken since the announcement to implement the said project including preparation of feasibility reports, redevelopment plans and consultations; (c) the reasons for non-implementation/delay in upgrading the station under the World Class Station programme; (d) whether the Government proposes for redevelopment/modernisation of said railway station under the Amrit Bharat Station Scheme/other programmes and if so, the details of works sanctioned, funds allocated and timelines for their completion; and (e) the details of the total capital expenditure incurred during the last five years on passenger amenities and infrastructure at Mangaluru Central and Mangaluru Junction railway stations? ANSWER MINISTER OF RAILWAYS, INFORMATION & BROADCASTING AND ELECTRONICS & INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY (SHRI ASHWINI VAISHNAW) (a) to (e): Ministry of Railways has launched Amrit Bharat Station Scheme for redevelopment of stations with a long-term approach. So far, 1338 stations have been identified for redevelopment under Amrit Bharat Station Scheme, out of which 61 stations including Mangalore Central and Mangalore Junction are located in Karnataka. § Page 1 of 6At Mangalore Central station, the works of development of second entry, construction of booking office, development of circulating area and parking at second entry and improvement of water supply arrangements have been completed in recent years. Further, the works for provision of platform shelters, coach indicator and extension of foot over bridge have been taken up. Master planning for development of Mangalore Central railway station under Amrit Bharat Station Scheme has been taken up. This is an iterative process requiring optimization and the time frame for such optimization cannot be indicated at this stage. Amrit Bharat Station scheme involves preparation of master plans and their implementation in phases to improve the stations. The master planning, keeping in view the necessity at each station includes: • Improvement of access to station and circulating areas • Integration of station with both sides of city • Improvement of station building • Improvement of waiting halls, toilets, sitting arrangement, water booths • Provision of wider foot over bridge/air concourse commensurate with passenger traffic • Provision of lift/escalators/ramp • Improvement /Provision of platform surface and cover over platforms • Provision of kiosks for local products through schemes like ‘One Station One Product’ • Parking areas, Multimodal integration • Amenities for Divyangjans • Better passenger information systems Page 2 of 6• Provision of executive lounges, nominated spaces for business meetings, landscaping, etc. The scheme also envisages sustainable and environment friendly solutions, provision of ballastless tracks etc. as per necessity, phasing and feasibility and creation of city centre at the station in the long term. The stations identified for redevelopment under Amrit Bharat Station Scheme in Karnataka are as following: No. of State Names of Stations Stations Almatti, Alnavar, Arsikere Junction, Badami, Bagalkot, Ballary, Bangalore Cantt., Bangarpet, Bantawala, Belagavi, Bidar, Chamaraja Nagar, Channapatna, Channasandra, Chikkamagaluru, Chikodi Road, Chitradurga, Davangere, Dharwad, Dodballapur, Gadag, Gangapur Road, Gangavathi, Ghataprabha, Gokak Road, Gubbi, Harihar, Hassan, Hosapete, Kalaburagi Jn., Kengeri, Koppal, Krantivira Sangolli Rayanna (Bengaluru Karnataka 61 Station), Krishnarajapuram, Malleswaram, Malur, Mandya, Mangalore Central, Mangalore Jn, Munirabad, Mysuru Jn (Mysore), Raichur Jn, Ramanagaram, Ranibennur, Raybag, Sagar Jambagaru, Sakleshpur, Shahabad, Shivamogga Town, Shravanabelgola, Shree Siddharoodha Swamiji Hubballi Jn, Subramanya Road, Talguppa, Tiptur, Tumakuru, Udupi, Vijayapura, Wadi, Whitefield, Yadgir, Yesvantpur Page 3 of 6Development works at railway stations under Amrit Bharat Station Scheme in Karnataka have been taken up at a good pace. Till now, works of 09 stations (Alnavar, Badami, Bagalkot, Dharwad, Gadag, Gokak Road, Koppal, Munirabad, Bantawala) in Karnataka have been completed under this scheme. The activities for development at other stations have also been taken up at good pace and progress of some of the stations located in Karnataka is as given below:-  Mangalore Junction station: The works of widening of the station approach road, works of circulating area including parking, improvement of station building including porch, booking office, provision of additional platform shelter, provision of new waiting hall with toilet, improvement to platform surfacing at platform 1, provision of lighting, coach guidance boards and parcel office have been completed. The works for construction of 6 m wide foot over bridge has been taken up.  Bangalore Cantonment station: The works of diversion road on south side, training centre, hostel on north side and electric substation building have been completed. The works of south side station building, north side station building, circulating area and foot over bridge have been taken up.  Chamaraja Nagar station: The works of improvement of station building, entrance porch, platform shelter, platform surfacing, waiting hall, booking counter, circulating area and parking have been completed. The works of lift, escalator and 12 m foot over bridge have been taken up. Page 4 of 6 Hosapete station: The works of improvement of station building, platform shelter, improvement of waiting hall and coach indication board at platform no. 1 have been completed. The works of platform surfacing, coach indication board at platform no. 2/3, lift, escalator and 12 m foot over bridge have been taken up.  Ranibennur station: The works of improvement of station building, entrance porch, platform shelter, platform surfacing, waiting hall, toilet, circulating area, parking and entry arch have been completed. The works of lift, escalator and 12 m foot over bridge have been taken up. Further, development / redevelopment / upgradation / modernisation of stations on Indian Railways is a continuous and ongoing process and works in this regard are undertaken as per requirement, subject to inter-se priority and availability of funds. Development / redevelopment / upgradation / modernisation of a station are carried out based on category of station/condition/traffic handled etc. Further, development/redevelopment/upgradation of Railway Stations is complex in nature involving safety of passengers & trains and requires various statutory clearances such as fire clearance, heritage, tree cutting, airport clearance etc. The progress also gets affected due to brown field related challenges such as shifting of utilities, (involving water/sewage lines, optical fiber cables, gas pipe lines, power/signal cables etc.) infringements, operation of trains without hindering passenger movement, speed restrictions due to works carried out in close proximity of high voltage power lines etc. and these factors affect the completion time. Therefore, no time frame can be indicated at this stage. Page 5 of 6Development / Upgradation / Modernization of stations including Amrit Bharat Station Scheme are generally funded under Plan Head-53 ‘Customer Amenities’. The details of allocation and expenditure under Plan Head-53 are maintained Zonal Railway-wise and not station-wise or state-wise. Mangalore Central and Mangalore junction Railway stations fall under the jurisdiction of Southern Railway for which an allocation (RE) of ₹ 1125 crores has been made for the financial year 2025-26. For Southern Railway, total expenditure of ₹3210 crores has been incurred during the last four and current year (till January, 2026). ***** Page 6 of 6
