UPGRADATION OF SAINIK SCHOOL, PURULIA
2272. SHRI JYOTIRMAY SINGH MAHATO:
Will the Minister of DEFENCE be pleased to state:
(a) whether the Government is aware that Sainik School, Purulia requires continuous upgradation
of its academic, hostel, sports and training infrastructure to meet present-day standards and if so,
the details thereof;
(b) the details of the funds allocated and works undertaken for upgradation of classrooms, hostels,
laboratories, sports facilities and other infrastructure at Sainik School, Purulia during the last five
years, year-wise;
(c) whether the Government proposes to develop Sainik School, Purulia as a Centre of Excellence
with modern sports infrastructure, including a synthetic athletics track, a multi-purpose indoor
sports complex, a swimming pool and advanced training facilities for cadets and if so, the details
thereof;
(d) whether any proposal for further expansion or modernisation of Sainik School, Purulia is
under consideration of the Government; and
(e) if so, the details thereof, along with the timeline likely to be taken for the same?

IN THE MINISTRY OF DEFENCE
(a) to (e) The Sainik School Society which manages the Sainik Schools makes assessments of
infrastructural gaps in academic/ hostel blocks, sports and training infrastructure/ facilities, etc,
of Sainik Schools including Sainik School, Purulia for ensuring their upgradation, renovation,
maintenance and augmentation, as and when required. In terms of the Memorandum of
Agreement between the Government of the Sponsoring State and the Sainik School Society, the
State Government concerned has to provide Land and Buildings including Indoor Games Hall,
Swimming Pool, Auditorium, Gymnasium and other sports amenities, infrastructure and initial
cost of equipment. Sainik School, Purulia has various Sports and Training facilities including a
Swimming Pool, Indoor Games Hall, Football and Hockey fields, Squash, Tennis and Basketball
Courts, Firing Range and Equestrian facilities. In the last five years from 2021-22 to 2025-26, the
Ministry of Defence and the Government of West Bengal have sanctioned approximately Rs. 8.4
Crore and Rs. 9.6 Crore respectively for various sports and training infrastructure facilities and
renovation/ maintenance/ augmentation/ upgradation works at Sainik School, Purulia.
