Temples in Spiritual Tourism Circuits

Ministry of Tourism Temples in Spiritual Tourism Circuits प्रव तथ: 18 DEC 2025 3:51PM by PIB Delhi Identification, development and promotion of tourist destinations including spiritual destinations and temples is primarily undertaken by the respective State Government/Union Territory (UT) Administration. However, the Ministry of Tourism through its various schemes provides financial assistance to the State Governments (SGs)/UT Administrations (UTAs) to complement these efforts by sanctioning projects, on receipt of the detailed project proposals (DPRs) from them in line with the scheme guidelines, Government instructions, inter-se-priority and availability of budget etc. The Ministry of Tourism in 2014-15 launched its Swadesh Darshan (SD) scheme with the idea to develop tourism infrastructure under identified thematic circuits such as Spiritual, Buddhist, Krishna, Ramayana, Tirthankar etc. in the country. This scheme has now been revamped as Swadesh Darshan 2.0 (SD2.0) with the objective to develop sustainable and responsible tourism destinations. The Ministry also provides financial assistance to the State Governments/ UT Administrations under its ‘Challenge Based Destination Development (CBDD)’, a sub-scheme of Swadesh Darshan. Further, the Ministry in 2014-15 also launched ‘Pilgrimage Rejuvenation and Spiritual Heritage Augmentation Drive (PRASHAD)’ with the objective of integrated development at identified pilgrimage & heritage destinations. In addition, Government of India under its ‘Special Assistance to States for Capital Investment (SASCI) – Development of Iconic Tourist Centres to Global Scale’ also sanctioned 40 projects in the country, with the primary objective to comprehensively develop iconic tourist centres in the country, branding and marketing them at global scale. For projects sanctioned at pilgrimage and spiritual destinations under the aforesaid schemes, Ministry of Tourism provides financial assistance to State Governments and Union Territory Administrations for development of required facilities for construction and upgradation of approach roads and parking facilities; development of essential amenities such as landscaping, pathways, CCTV, illumination and gazebos; and creation of tourist facilitation infrastructure, including multi-cuisine food courts with souvenir shops, waiting lounges, etc. The details of the projects sanctioned under aforesaid schemes including those at pilgrimage and spiritual destinations is annexed. Ministry of Tourism does not maintain specific data in respect of number of pilgrims visits. However, Ministry of Tourism collects and compiles data on Domestic Tourist Visits (DTVs) from States/UTs, which also include visits undertaken for pilgrimage purposes.
