DRINKING WATER RESILIENCE FOR ERODE CITY, TAMIL NADU
NO. 2609. SHRI ANTHIYUR P. SELVARASU:
Will the Minister of HOUSING AND URBAN AFFAIRS be pleased to state:
(a) whether Government has assessed the drinking water resilience needs of Erode City, in the
State of Tamil Nadu under AMRUT and related schemes in view of rising demand,
groundwater quality concerns and summer stress;
(b) if so, the details of Government project support, performance monitoring and service-level
benchmarks applied for water supply improvements in Erode City; and
(c) the steps Government proposes to ensure reliable water delivery, leakage reduction and
metering-based efficiency for Erode City’s supply systems?

(a) to (c): Water is a State subject. Government of India supplements the efforts of the States
through schematic interventions/ advisories. It provides financial and technical support to the
States through various Mission/ Schemes such as Atal Mission for Rejuvenation and Urban
Transformation (AMRUT) and AMRUT 2.0.
The State government of Tamil Nadu has informed that as part of AMRUT scheme during
the year 2015-16, the water resilience of Erode City was assessed with an objective to achieve the
service level benchmark of 100% coverage and per capita availability of water to the households
in Erode Municipal Corporation. Accordingly, a water supply scheme to Erode Corporation was
approved with a cost of ₹484.45 crores including Central funding of 50% under AMRUT. The
scheme aims to cater to the intermediate population of 7.00 lakhs for the year 2032 with a provision
of 147.69 Million Litres per Day (MLD) of water supply to meet the demand of ultimate projected
population of 9.05 lakhs for the year 2047 at rate of 135 Litre per Capita per Day (lpcd). The
project components include Water Treatment plant of 120 MLD capacity, 21 new service
reservoirs, 833.30 KM water network and 1,05,000 House Service Connections. The scheme has
been completed and operational.
In addition to the above, under AMRUT 2.0, the State Government has taken up a pilot
24x7 Water supply project in Erode Corporation for providing 24x7 Water supply in 10 Water
zones with to cover about 25,000 House hold connections with an objective to reduce Non revenue
water level below 20%, through measures such as leakage detection and control, pressure
management, and strengthening of the distribution network.
