EXPANSION OF METRO RAIL NETWORK
1028. SHRI S. SELVAGANABATHY:
Will the Minister of Housing and Urban Affairs be pleased to state:
(a) the present status of India’s metro rail network, including the total operational length and
cities covered as of December, 2025;
(b) the details of metro projects inaugurated during 2025,
(c) the metro expansion projects approved in 2025, including; including Chennai Metro
Phase II, III along with their estimated costs and timelines; and
(d) the ridership growth achieved and the contribution of metro expansion to urban mobility and
decarbonisation?
ANSWER
THE MINISTER OF STATE IN THE MINISTRY OF HOUSING AND URBAN AFFAIRS
(SHRI TOKHAN SAHU)
(a): At present, about 1096 km of metro rail network including RRTS is operational in 26 cities
across the country.
(b): The details of Metro Rail Projects inaugurated in 2025 are as per Annexure – I.
(c): The details of Metro Rail Project approved in 2025 are as per Annexure – II.
(d): The daily average ridership of metro has increased from 28 lakh in 2013-14 to 1.15 crore per
day in 2025-26. Metro Rail Projects have contributed significantly to urban mobility by providing a
reliable and high-capacity public transport system, thereby reducing dependence on private vehicles,
easing traffic congestion which results in reduction in vehicular emissions and fuel savings.
