Parliament Question: Hostels for Minorities

GOVERNMENT OF INDIA MINISTRY OF MINORITY AFFAIRS LOK SABHA UNSTARRED QUESTION NO. 4063 ANSWERED ON 12.08.2026 HOSTELS FOR MINORITIES 4063. SHRI K C VENUGOPAL Will the Minister of MINORITY AFFAIRS be pleased to state:- (a) the total number of hostels constructed under the minority welfare schemes for minority students during the last five years; (b) the number of hostels that are currently functional and the States where they are located; (c) whether the Union Government are considering to construct more such hostels in the States particularly in Kerala; and (d) if so, the details thereof and if not, the reasons therefor? ANSWER THE MINISTER OF MINORITY AFFAIRS (SHRI KIREN RIJIJU) (a) & (b): The Pradhan Mantri Jan Vikas Karyakram (PMJVK) is a Centrally Sponsored Scheme and one of the flagship programmes of the Ministry of Minority Affairs. The scheme aims to create community infrastructure in Minority Concentration Areas across sectors such as education, health, skill development, women-centric initiatives, drinking water and sanitation, sports, renewable energy, and other essential community infrastructure. During the last five years, 64 hostel projects have been sanctioned under PMJVK. PMJVK is a community infrastructure development scheme under which the assets created are intended for the benefit of the entire population of the identified Minority Concentration Areas. The implementation, operation, and maintenance of the sanctioned hostel projects are the responsibility of the respective State Governments and Union Territory Administrations. (c) & (d): The State-wise details of proposals received, including those from the State of Kerala, for construction of hostels during the year 2026–27 is given at Annexure-I.
