Parliament Question: Smart Cities selected under the Smart Cities Mission

GOVERNMENT OF INDIA MINISTRY OF HOUSING AND URBAN AFFAIRS RAJYA SABHA UNSTARRED QUESTION NO. 2600 ANSWERED ON 16/03/2026 SMART CITIES SELECTED UNDER THE SMART CITIES MISSION 2600. PROF. MANOJ KUMAR JHA: Will the Minister of Housing and Urban Affairs be pleased to state: (a) the number of Smart Cities selected under the Smart Cities Mission (SCM) and the total approved project cost; (b) the number of Smart City projects that have been completed as of December, 2025 and the number that remain incomplete; (c) the total Central and State funds released for SCM and the total expenditure incurred as of December, 2025; and (d) whether CAG or other agencies have audited SCM implementation and if so, the findings regarding delays, cost overruns and benefit realization? ANSWER THE MINISTER OF STATE IN THE MINISTRY OF HOUSING AND URBAN AFFAIRS (SHRI TOKHAN SAHU) (a) to (c): Under Smart Cities Mission (SCM), out of Central Government’s allocation of ₹48,000 Cr, the 100 cities selected under the mission have been able to claim central financial assistance of ₹47,458 crore (i.e. 99% of the total Central share allocation for cities). As reported by the States/ UTs, as on 01.03.2026, amount of ₹46,326 Cr has been utilized (i.e. 97% of the total Central Share released for cities). Under SCM, a total 8,064 projects amounting to ₹1,64,811 Cr were taken up since inception of the mission, out of which 7,784 projects (97% of total projects undertaken) worth ₹1,56,159 Cr have been completed and 280 projects amounting to ₹8,652 Cr are at implementation stage. State/UT wise Central Financial Assistance claimed & utilized by 100 Smart Cities and status of projects under SCM is given at Annexure. (d): NITI Ayog in its report titled ‘Evaluation of Centrally Sponsored Schemes in Urban Transformation Sector and Skill Development’ published in September 2025, has concluded that the SCM Mission has demonstrated strong relevance to India’s Urban needs, with its objectives aligning with national development agendas and SDGs. ******Annexure Annexure referred to in reply for part (a) to (c) of Rajya Sabha Unstarred Question No. 2600 for answer on 16th March, 2026 regarding Smart Cities selected under the Smart Cities Mission.
