Parliament Question: Widening of Narsi–Degloor Section of NH-161 to Four Lanes

GOVERNMENT OF INDIA MINISTRY OF ROAD TRANSPORT AND HIGHWAYS LOK SABHA UNSTARRED QUESTION NO. 6240 ANSWERED ON 02ND APRIL, 2026 WIDENING OF NARSI-DEGLOOR SECTION OF NH-161 TO FOUR LANES 6240. SHRI CHAVAN RAVINDRA VASANTRAO: Will the MINISTER OF ROAD TRANSPORT AND HIGHWAYS सड़क परिवहन औि िाजमार्ग मंत्री be pleased to state: (a) whether a 40-50 Kms stretch between Narsi to Degloor of National Highway (NH)-161 in Maharashtra is in dilapidated condition and if so, the details thereof; (b) whether a major portion of above NH has already been developed as a four-lane highway but the Narsi–Degloor section is still only of two lane wide, resulting in traffic congestion and frequent road accidents on the stretch and if so, the reasons therefor; (c) whether accident and loss of life and property due to accidents is a routine affair on the said stretch and if so, the details thereof; (d) whether the Government has conducted any survey or assessment regarding the upgradation/widening of the Narsi–Degloor section of above NH to four lanes and if so, the details thereof; and (e) the time by which the said stretch is likely to be converted into four lane to facilitate the commuters of the region? ANSWER THE MINISTER OF ROAD TRANSPORT AND HIGHWAYS (SHRI NITIN JAIRAM GADKARI) (a) to (b) NH-161 starts in Akola District, Maharashtra and terminates in Sangareddy, Telangana. Based on the traffic, the stretch from Akola to Nanded has been developed to a 4-lane configuration by the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI). The Nanded to Narsi section of NH-161 has been developed to a 4-lane configuration in 42.00 km length and 2 lanes in 35.40 km from Narsi to Degloor as per the traffic requirement by the State Government of Maharashtra before declaration of this road as NH-161 on Design, Build, Finance, Operate and Transfer mode (DBFOT) with a concession period of 25 years upto 2036. (c) Accidents have been reported on this NH stretch for the reasons attributed to over-speeding, rash driving, non-wearing of helmets, drinking and driving, etc. The number of accidents, fatalities and injuries reported on this NH section during the last three years including the current year are as under: Number of accidents Number of Fatalities Number of Injuries reported reported reported 187 83 104 (d) to (e) The stretch is presently under DBFOT with State Government. Any proposal for improvements/upgradation can only be considered if the State Government buys back the project and handover the same to Government of India. *****
